Raphael Onyedika to Frankfurt: 3 Austin Okocha records Super Eagles star can break

Eintracht Frankfurt have moved closer to completing a deal for the Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika from Belgian champions Club Brugge, Afrik-Foot reports.

After impressing in Belgium over the last three seasons, the 25-year-old appears set to move to the German Bundesliga. Onyedika helped Club Brugge win two Belgian Pro League titles, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup, with a number of memorable displays in UEFA competitions.

If the transfer is completed, Onyedika will join one of Germany’s most respected clubs and follow the path once taken by Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha. The former Super Eagles captain remains one of Frankfurt’s greatest foreign players, leaving behind records that have stood for more than three decades.

Frankfurt confident of completing Onyedika transfer

Eintracht Frankfurt have made significant progress in negotiations with Club Brugge over the past few days and are now optimistic of finalising the transfer soon.

According to German newspaper BILD via LigaInsider, Frankfurt have increased their offer to around €9 million, slightly higher than their previous proposal of about €8 million. Sporting director Markus Krösche and the club’s management reportedly believe an agreement with Club Brugge is now within reach.

Personal terms are not expected to be a problem. Reports say Onyedika has already agreed on a contract with Frankfurt and has made it clear that the Bundesliga side is his preferred destination despite recent interest from Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad.

The former FC Midtjylland midfielder is currently training with Club Brugge ahead of the new season but could travel to Frankfurt’s training camp in Grassau immediately after the transfer is completed. Reports also suggest he could sign a long-term contract running until 2030 or 2031, giving him plenty of time to build his own legacy at the club.

Should the move go through, Onyedika will become the latest Nigerian to wear Frankfurt’s famous shirt after Okocha’s unforgettable spell between 1992 and 1996.

This record is achievable for Onyedika if he settles quickly and becomes a regular starter. At 25, he is entering the prime years of his career. A contract lasting until 2030 or 2031 would give him five or six seasons to surpass Okocha’s total. Although Okocha was famous for his creativity rather than goals, he still produced remarkable attacking numbers during his time in Germany. Onyedika plays much deeper in midfield and is known more for winning tackles, recovering possession and controlling games than scoring regularly. However, modern midfielders are increasingly expected to contribute goals from long-range shots, late runs into the penalty area and set-piece situations.

If Onyedika spends several successful seasons in Frankfurt and improves his attacking output each year, he could gradually close the gap on Okocha’s record.
