TSG Hoffenheim are reportedly on the verge of securing the services of Gift Orban from Olympique Lyon.
Despite previous links to Turkish champions Galatasaray, the Bundesliga side appears to be leading the race for the Nigerian striker.
Since joining Lyon, Orban has struggled to replicate his form. With only three starts across all competitions this season, he has failed to secure a regular spot in the lineup.
A controversial social media post in October, praising AJ Auxerre’s Sinaly Diomandé after a goal against Lyon, further marginalized him at the club.
Now, with Lyon grappling with financial instability, Orban has been put up for sale, paving the way for Hoffenheim’s interest.
How Orban fits into Hoffenheim’s system
Orban would arrive with high expectations, especially given Hoffenheim’s current struggles in front of goal.
Hoffenheim’s offensive struggles are evident, with the team ranked 12th in the Bundesliga for goals scored this season.
With only 19 goals scored in 14 Bundesliga matches, Hoffenheim sit precariously close to the relegation zone in 14th place. Manager Christian Ilzer has tried multiple forwards in the number nine position, but none have delivered consistently.
They average just 1.36 goals per game, with Andrej Kramarić leading their tally with six league goals. Behind him, Marius Bülter and Adam Hložek have contributed four and three goals, respectively.
Orban’s arrival could provide the clinical edge Hoffenheim desperately needs. His success, however, hinges on the team’s ability to supply him with chances.
A system that emphasizes creative service from the midfield and wide areas would be crucial for him to replicate his form from Gent.
If the deal is completed, Orban would become the second Nigerian at Hoffenheim, joining Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma.
