How Osimhen’s €21m salary could complicate Galatasaray’s Bruno Fernandes plans

Published on by

Galatasaray are considering an ambitious move for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as they look to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level in Europe, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Turkish champions have identified the Portugal international as a major target, with club insider Emre Kaplan claiming that they are prepared to offer Fernandes the same salary currently earned by Victor Osimhen.

Galatasaray’s interest in Fernandes comes as the club continues to strengthen around Osimhen, who has established himself as the team’s most important attacking player since his permanent move from Napoli.

Kaplan has also suggested that Galatasaray would be willing to meet Manchester United’s demands for the midfielder, meaning the financial commitment could extend far beyond Fernandes’ wages.

But while signing Fernandes would make considerable sense on the pitch, Galatasaray’s ability to sustain another enormous salary is a different question.

Why Galatasaray are keen on Fernandes

There is little mystery about why Galatasaray want Fernandes. There are very few midfielders in the World that can do what the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder does on the pitch.

He finished last season with 21 Premier League assists, setting a new single-season record, while also contributing eight goals for Manchester United.

Those numbers explain why Fernandes could be useful alongside Osimhen.

Galatasaray already have one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers in the Nigerian. What they need is more consistent elite-level service into the areas where Osimhen is most effective, and Fernandes can provide that.

His ability to find runners with through balls, deliver dangerous crosses and create chances from central areas would give Osimhen another reliable source of opportunities. The Nigerian’s movement and physicality could also give Fernandes the ideal target for his risk-taking passing.

The bigger objective, however, is the Champions League. Galatasaray have invested heavily in creating a squad capable of competing in Europe, but their ambitions will eventually be judged by how far they can go against the continent’s top teams

How Osimhen’s salary can be a problem

The problem is that Galatasaray have already made an enormous financial commitment to Osimhen.

The Nigerian’s total salary package is worth around €21 million per year, including his salary, loyalty bonus and image-rights payments. That makes him comfortably the second-highest-paid player in Turkish football, just behind Mo Salah.

Adding Fernandes on a similar package would put another huge burden on Galatasaray’s finances.

The issue becomes clearer when the club’s wider wage structure is considered. Per Capology, Galatasaray’s estimated annual wage bill is around €96 million, meaning Osimhen’s package alone is worth about 22% of that.

Paying another player roughly €21 million per year would therefore not be a minor addition. It would potentially put two players on salaries that together account for almost half of Galatasaray’s current wage bill estimates.

The club has already had to make major financial decisions to fund its ambitions. Galatasaray sold the development rights to the valuable Florya training-ground land as part of a strategy to generate significant revenue and improve its financial position.

That does not mean the club cannot afford Fernandes. It does, however, demonstrate that Galatasaray have had to find substantial additional resources to support their rapid expansion.

Kaplan’s comments suggest they are willing to push those limits again.

“Galatasaray is ready to pay Bruno Fernandes the same salary as Osimhen,” he said, while adding that the club would also put whatever is required for the transfer fee on the table.

That would be a huge financial statement. Galatasaray are also under pressure to spend because their domestic rivals are becoming ambitious.

Fenerbahçe have added major attacking names such as Mason Greenwood and Romelu Lukaku, while Trabzonspor have raised eyebrows with the signing of Mohamed Salah.

The Turkish title race is becoming a competition between clubs willing to make aggressive investments in their squads, and Galatasaray cannot afford to fall behind.
