Victor Osimhen vs Julián Álvarez: Which striker is better for Barcelona?

Published on by

Barcelona’s search for a new No. 9 has taken an awkward turn. The club’s preferred target, Julián Álvarez, is caught in a difficult transfer dispute with Atlético Madrid, while Victor Osimhen has been mentioned as a possible alternative, Afrik-Foot reports.

The two strikers offer very different solutions. Álvarez is 26 and has played for River Plate, Manchester City and Atlético. He is a World Cup and Copa América winner and has also lifted the Champions League with Manchester City. He is a fast, versatile forward who can link with teammates and also play as a second striker or attacking midfielder.

Arsenal-linked Osimhen, 27, is a more traditional centre-forward. The Nigeria international is 1.85 metres tall and weighs 76 kilograms, while Álvarez is 1.70m and 71kg. Osimhen attacks space behind defenders, uses his strength in duels and is a major threat in the air.

That difference matters at Barcelona. Flashscore reports that Barcelona had focused on Álvarez but were finding negotiations with Atlético difficult. It also said Osimhen could become relevant if Barcelona’s preferred options disappear late in the transfer window. Sports Mole, however, reported earlier that Barcelona admire Osimhen but were not planning a summer move for him.

So, if Barcelona had a straight choice between the two, who would make more sense?

Osimhen vs Alvarez: Goals and finishing

Osimhen, who is also on the radar of Manchester United, has the stronger record as a pure goalscorer. The Super Eagles forward scored 22 goals, including seven in the Champions League, and supplied eight assists in 33 matches for Galatasaray last season. His wider record is also strong. He scored 76 goals and made 18 assists in 133 matches for Napoli between 2020 and 2024, followed by 59 goals and 16 assists in 74 appearances for Galatasaray.

Álvarez also had an excellent Champions League campaign. The Argentine managed 18 goals and seven assists in all competitions in 2025-26, including 10 goals in 15 Champions League appearances.

There is an important difference, though. Osimhen is built around finishing moves. He wants to attack the six-yard box, run behind the defensive line and turn crosses and through balls into goals. Álvarez can score in those areas, but he offers more between the lines.

Verdict: Osimhen.

If Barcelona simply need a striker who can turn chances into goals, the Nigerian has the clearer profile.

Style, physical strength and pressing

This is where Álvarez makes a stronger case. Barcelona need more than a player who waits inside the penalty area. Their attack depends on movement, combinations and quick pressure after losing the ball. Álvarez is comfortable dropping away from the centre-forward position, connecting with midfielders and moving into different attacking areas.

His history at Manchester City also gave him experience in a possession-based team where forwards must press, move and combine rather than simply wait for crosses.

Osimhen can press aggressively too, especially when he has a clear trigger to chase a centre-back or goalkeeper. His greatest physical advantages, however, come from his speed, power and ability to compete against defenders.

At 1.85m and 76kg, Osimhen offers Barcelona a target that can occupy centre-backs and win physical battles. Álvarez, at 1.70m and 71kg, is smaller but more flexible in tight spaces.

That could make Álvarez easier to fit into Barcelona’s combinations around the penalty area. Osimhen could make the attack more direct and give the team another way to hurt deep defensive blocks.

Verdict: Álvarez for combination play and pressing; Osimhen for physical power.

For Barcelona’s current style, Álvarez gets the edge.

Age, experience and Barcelona fit

The age difference is small. Osimhen was born on Dec. 29, 1998, while Álvarez was born on Jan. 31, 2000. That means Osimhen is 27 and Álvarez is 26.

Experience gives Álvarez another advantage. He won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 and the Copa América in 2021 and 2024. With Manchester City, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. He also won the Copa Libertadores with River Plate.

Osimhen has major experience too. He won Serie A with Napoli and has become a leading striker in Turkey. His Napoli record shows he has performed at a high level in one of Europe’s major leagues.

The transfer situation, however, changes the equation. Barcelona’s pursuit of Álvarez has become extremely difficult because Atlético do not want to sell. He is set to be benched for Atlético’s LaLiga opener against Málaga amid the transfer dispute. Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has said the club will not sell him, even for €200 million. Álvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 games for Atlético.

Barcelona have therefore faced a choice between paying a huge fee for their preferred striker or turning elsewhere.

Osimhen is not an easy alternative. Galatasaray do not want to sell him and his salary, €15m per season, would make a deal difficult.

Verdict: Álvarez.

His Champions League pedigree, international success and ability to play in several attacking roles make him a natural fit for Barcelona’s football.

Afrik-Foot’s final call

If Barcelona want the better traditional No. 9, Osimhen has the stronger case. His goals, speed, height and physical power would give Hansi Flick a different weapon.

If Barcelona want the better fit for their possession game, Álvarez is the more complete option. He can press, combine, move into midfield areas and attack the box. His experience with Manchester City and Argentina also means he has already played in systems where tactical flexibility is vital.
