Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen continues to be linked with a move to Chelsea after he was seen celebrating his country’s progress to the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) with his idol Didier Drogba.
The pair have been seen together a number of times already during the tournament, and their camaraderie seems to be only growing stronger.
Osimhen has been a key figure for Nigeria as they aim to win their fourth continental title in Ivory Coast.
The Napoli forward has only scored once in the tournament, but his all-round performances have been impressive for the most part.
Drogba and Osimhen share a moment after Super Eagles’ win over Cameroon
The 25-year-old was once again in imperious form when the Super Eagles defeated Cameroon in the AFCON Round of 16 on Saturday, January 27, setting up Ademola Lookman’s opening goal.
Osimhen put up a gallant performance from the front, holding up play and chasing every ball as Jose Peseiro’s side earned a deserved 2-0 victory over the Indomitable Lions.
In the aftermath of the game, the striker was seen having a moment with Drogba, who he previously described as his idol.
It is also the third time that Osimhen has linked up with Drogba, with the pair connecting before and after Nigeria’s win against Ivory Coast during the group stage.
Osimhen transfer news and the Drogba-Chelsea link
Meanwhile, Osimhen has been linked with several European clubs, but Drogba’s bromance with the Nigerian striker has heightened talks of a move to Chelsea.
The Blues are currently without a recognised number nine and will likely prioritise signing a proven goal scorer in the summer to augment their youthful squad.
Osimhen himself has been open about seeking a new challenge despite signing a new contract last year.
The Napoli forward recently stated that he has already made up his mind on what step to take next.
“For me, at Napoli I signed a new contract, I am enjoying my time there. At the end of the season… I already made up my mind. I already know what I want to do with my career,” Osimhen said.
“Since I've started I've been the one taking my own decisions, everything is working out well for me even though I started it didn't go as well as planned. I already had my plan, I already know the next step I want to take.
“For now, I want to finish the season strong, relax with my daughter, think about my life and then come out with the decision I have already made.”
Osimhen will be aiming to add to his tally in the AFCON when Nigeria faces Angola in the quarter-finals on Friday, January 3.
