Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has praised defender Manny Fernandez after the 24-year-old enjoyed a memorable start to his international career with Nigeria, Afrik-Foot reports.
Fernandez made his debut in a friendly against Iran in Turkey last week and quickly followed it up with a goal in his first start, finding the net in a 2-2 draw against Jordan. His performances on the international stage have capped what has already been a strong season at club level.
Rohl, speaking ahead of Rangers’ Premiership clash with Dundee United, reflected on how far the defender has come since arriving from Peterborough United last summer.

“Football is about development and belief. I think it was not easy for him, when I arrived, he was, I would not say far away, but he was not in a position to be a starter,” Rohl said as per Glasgow Times.
A mix of injuries in the squad and key conversations behind the scenes helped create an opportunity for Fernandez, who has since taken his chance with consistent performances.
“Now it’s a great performance, week by week, though there are still things to improve,” the Rangers boss added.

Growth at Rangers and rising international profile
Fernandez has become an important figure for Rangers this season, turning himself from a squad player into a regular starter under Rohl. His impact has been felt at both ends of the pitch, with the defender contributing six goals in all competitions, an impressive return for a centre-back.
Much of his attacking threat has come from set-pieces, where his aerial strength has made him a constant danger. Defensively, he has also stood out, winning a high percentage of duels and fitting well into Rohl’s high-pressing system, which demands speed, timing, and confidence on the ball.
Rohl believes Fernandez’s journey is a clear example to others at the club of what is possible with hard work and patience.

The manager also pointed to the defender’s composure and growing all-round ability as reasons for his trust.
“But it’s also a great way to show players what you can do at Rangers,” he said.
“I think he’s now five or six goals for us. He’s calm on the ball; he is better and better also against the ball. There are a lot of things that we need, I think there’s also a reason why I put him on, and I trust him.
“I’m happy with his development, yeah, let’s continue, because it’s the most important thing in football, it’s never about the past, it’s always about tomorrow.”
Despite not qualifying for the World Cup, the Super Eagles face a busy summer with games lined up against Poland, Portugal, India and Jamaica. Fernandez would hope to be a part of that adventure with his performances for Rangers likely to earn him the attention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.
