Super Eagles: Eric Chelle faulted for exclusion of NPFL players in March friendlies

Former Super Eagles and Malmö FF striker Peter Ijeh has called out Eric Chelle for not including home-based players in his team, Afrik Foot reports.

The Franco-Malian tactician became Nigeria’s coach in January 2025 and has constantly faced scrutiny over his decision not to include as many home-based players.

The last time NPFL players featured in Chelle’s team was during the 2025 Unity Cup hosted in Brentford last May.

Since then, Chelle has limited his selection pool to players plying their trade abroad, with only two of those on African soil – Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie.

Peter Ijeh calls Eric Chelle out over exclusion of NPFL players

The Super Eagles played two games during the March International break, sealing a win against Iran, and a draw against Jordan.

Players like Emmanuel Fernandez, Yira Sor and Philipp Otele made their first appearances in the green and white colours of Nigeria.

That decision left Ijeh divided, as he felt several home-based players should’ve been included.

”It would have been more interesting to see more NPFL players capped, providing them with much-needed international experience and exposure rather than relying solely on the regular squad members,” the 49-year-old said in an interview with Footy Africa.

“There are several fringe players who haven’t seen much action lately; they should have been handed an opportunity to prove their worth.

“In my view, the squad should have featured a 40-50% mix of NPFL talents and fringe internationals.

Despite his complaints, Ijeh was pleased with Emmanuel Fernandez’s performance, although he questioned Alex Iwobi’s discipline.

”I must congratulate Emmanuel Fernandez on his debut and his goal.

“His performance was a bright spot, though his ultimate impact will depend on the specific role the coaching staff envisions for him within the tactical setup,” the former Goteburg striker continued.

“While Iwobi’s red card could have been avoided, it served as a steep learning curve.

“It tested the team’s mental fortitude and their ability to remain compact while playing with a numerical disadvantage.

“I wish the Super Eagles the very best as they pursue qualification for the next AFCON. Furthermore, the ultimate goal remains the 2030 FIFA World Cup, and I hope to see them secure their place on that stage,” Peter Ijeh concluded.
