Real Madrid transfer: Three reasons Calvin Bassey should replace Bastoni at Inter

Published on by , updated on

Real Madrid are making concrete moves for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, with the Italian defender understood to have paused negotiations with other clubs in anticipation of a move to the Bernabéu this summer, Afrik Foot reports.

The Spanish giants, under new manager José Mourinho, have already strengthened their defensive unit this summer with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries, but the Portuguese wants another centre-back, and Bastoni has emerged as the primary target.

At 27, with Champions League experience and the kind of composure in possession that suits Mourinho’s system, the Italian international fits the brief precisely.

According to AS, a deal in the region of €60 million is understood to be on the table, and Inter are open to parting ways with the versatile defender.

For Inter, the challenge is significant. Bastoni is not merely a quality defender; he is the organising intelligence of their entire defensive structure, the left-footed ball-player whose distribution and reading of the game allows the Nerazzurri to build from the back.

Replacing him is not a like-for-like exercise. It requires a defender who is a beast in duels and has the technical assurance to operate in a back three or a back four system in and out of possession.

Calvin Bassey fits that description, and with just one year left on his Fulham contract, a deal might be on the cards, provided Bastoni moves to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Three reasons Calvin Bassey should replace Bastoni at Inter

The first reason is positional and tactical understanding. Bassey operates primarily as a left-sided centre-back, exactly the role Bastoni has made his own at Inter under the club’s back three system.

At 6ft 1in, Bassey combines the physical presence to dominate aerial duels with the technical quality to play out from the back under pressure, a non-negotiable requirement for any defender putting on the Nerazzuri shirt.

His experience at Fulham under Marco Silva, a manager who demanded significant ball-playing involvement from his centre-backs, has sharpened the qualities that Inter’s system demands.

The second reason is timing. Bassey has just one year remaining on his Fulham contract, with no extension talks currently underway.

Fulham’s pursuit of Chibuike Nwaiwu as a defensive reinforcement, and the reported interest from Inter Milan themselves in Bassey’s services, suggests the club are planning for a future without him.

That contract situation gives Inter negotiating leverage. A player of Bassey’s quality, entering the prime years of his career, would normally command a substantial transfer fee, but the combination of contract uncertainty and Fulham’s need to generate transfer income means Inter could realistically acquire him for a substantial fee, compared to the enormous figure they would receive from Real Madrid for Bastoni.

The third reason is the consideration of the Nigerian National team. Playing at Inter comes with the expectation of performing consistently at the highest level.

His current level at Fulham, a mid-table Premier League club without European football, is respectable but doesn’t stretch a leader and a player who wants to play on the biggest stage of world football.

Inter Milan, competing in the Champions League and perpetually challenging for the Scudetto, would represent a significant upgrade for the former Rangers defender, as he’ll be competing in the Champions League and contesting for the Scudetto.

That level of demand will make Bassey a leader in the Super Eagles squad in little to no time.

Bastoni’s imminent departure to Real Madrid will be one of the defining transfers of this summer window, and it could open the door for Bassey to test his abilities at a big club.
