Russia vs Nigeria friendly has made youngster Chibby Nwoko travel more than 24 hours from London to Nizhny Novgorod for what could be an unforgettable experience, Afrik-Foot reports.
The exciting Fulham midfielder did not make the exhausting journey merely to watch Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Russia.

Russia vs Nigeria: 3 reasons Nwoko could debut for Super Eagles
1. Form that demanded attention
Nwoko has opened the 2026-27 campaign in fine form. The former Chelsea schoolboy has made four goal involvements in seven appearances across Premier League 2, the EFL Trophy and National League Cup.
His PL2 numbers offer even more encouragement. He has played 346 minutes across his first five league appearances and produced two assists against Burnley U21. The Premier League also included Nwoko among the candidates for its August PL2 Player of the Month award.
Nwoko’s arrival, therefore, gives the Super Eagles a midfielder with attacking momentum, even if much of his potential is yet unleashed.

2. A midfielder built for Chelle’s puzzle
The youngster is a modern-day midfielder with loads of qualities that make him a coach’s delight.
Nwoko is versatile, a quality that offers Chelle several tactical routes. Naturally a left-footed midfielder, the former Forest Green loanee is capable of operating as a six, eight or 10, while also possessing the qualities to break up play and contribute in the final third.
That range could be valuable against Russia, particularly with Chelle using the friendly to assess new options. The NFF’s 24-man squad contains eight midfielders, with Nwoko among the newcomers to the senior setup for the Russia vs Nigeria fixture.

3. Chelle did not pick him on reputation alone
Chelle’s interest in Nwoko is personal and deliberate. The Super Eagles coach tracked his progress at Fulham, consulted Alex Iwobi about the academy graduate and then watched him make his first-team debut against AFC Wimbledon on August 27. Nwoko played 22 minutes in that appearance.
Now the youngster has finally reached Russia after a London-to-Qatar-to-Moscow-to-Nizhny Novgorod journey lasting more than 24 hours.
The next step is far shorter: a place in Nigeria’s starting XI, or at least a few minutes that could turn Chelle’s long-standing interest in Nwoko into his first Super Eagles appearance.
