Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil has expressed strong support for Umar Sadiq, highlighting the Nigerian forward's dedication and effort on the pitch.
Sadiq, who earned a spot in Alguacil's starting XI during Real Sociedad's 2-1 away victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, had a goal ruled out in the match.
The Spanish manager expressed confidence that it's time for the Super Eagles star to demonstrate his talent and make a meaningful contribution to the team's success.
Sadiq's time at Real Sociedad has been marked by challenges since his €20 million transfer from Almeria in 2022, with his contract extending until 2028. Shortly after the start of his debut season, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for the entire year, resulting in a loss of 45 games.
Despite this adversity, the 27-year-old made a strong return last season, successfully reintegrating into the squad. He played in 26 matches, starting in 12, and averaged 43 minutes on the field. During the season, he contributed three goals and one assist to the team's efforts.
Alguacil backs Sadiq to shine despite recent setbacks
Speaking to the press after the game, Alguacil commended Sadiq for his hard work and positive attitude despite having a goal ruled out.
“And what happened with Sadiq is obviously annoying, because it's important for forwards to score and, for one that scores, it's ruled out,” he said as per Marca.
“But he gave his all and, despite the few minutes, he's working and behaving very well with his teammates. Let him keep working like this and hopefully, when he gets the next opportunity, he'll score, because he deserves it.”
In that match, Sadiq recorded two shots on target and missed one scoring opportunity. He had 19 touches, completed all 10 of his passes accurately, and won two out of five ground duels.
The towering forward's has made seven appearances for Real Sociedad across all competitions this season. While he has yet to find the back of the net, he has contributed one assist and averaged 45 minutes of playing time per game.
