Super Eagles target Samu Omorodion has chosen a new name.

The 20-year-old, born in Melilla, Spain to Nigerian parents, is now adopting his mother’s maiden name, Aghehowa, over his father’s surname, Omorodion.

Omorodion, now wearing the name “Samu. A” on his Porto jersey, has been making headlines in Portugal.

Since joining Porto during the summer transfer window, he has scored 11 goals in 11 matches, quickly establishing himself as a reliable option in the No. 9 role. Aside from a brief 17-minute debut against Sporting, Samu has scored in seven of his ten other appearances for the club.

Samu chooses mother’s name: Aghehowa

Reflecting on his decision, Samu shared his reasoning with Porto's Revista Dragões magazine via PortuGOAL.

“Everything that my mother did for me has no price, and I want to pay homage to her by using her surname. I want to be known through her surname. People know me by my other name [Omorodion, his father’s surname], but I want to be known as Aghehowa.”

While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have actively pursued Omorodion for the Super Eagles, their efforts have yet to secure his commitment. Currently a Spanish youth international, Samu represented Spain at the 2024 Olympics, contributing a goal en route to Spain’s gold medal.

As he redefines his identity, speculation grows around whether this name change might hint at a future national allegiance shift. For now, though, Samu remains firmly within Spain's setup, with his eyes on a promising future.
