Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze is set to leave AC Milan at the end of the season, having failed to establish himself as a key player in the squad.
The Nigeria international moved to Milan from Villarreal for €21.1 million in 2023, but has been unable to replicate the form that made him one of Europe's most exciting wingers. Under multiple coaches, his role in the team has diminished, and now, with Sergio Conceição in charge, his departure seems inevitable.
Milan are, per reports, keen to restructure their squad for next season. Chukwueze is one of those expected to make way: although he remains under contract until 2028, the club is open to selling him for around €20 million or arranging a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Here are three reasons why Chukwueze’s dream move to AC Milan has not gone as planned
Injury woes have halted Chukwueze’s progress
One of the biggest setbacks for Chukwueze has been his recurring hamstring injuries. Since joining Milan, he has struggled to maintain fitness, with multiple spells on the sidelines disrupting his rhythm.
His injury troubles began in his first season: in the 2023/24 campaign, he was ruled out for several weeks on two separate occasions.
The issue has persisted into the current campaign, sidelining him for key fixtures including Milan’s Champions League campaign.

For a player who relies heavily on pace and agility, these injuries have significantly impacted his ability to influence games. They have also made it difficult for him to gain the trust of Milan’s managers, who have been reluctant to rely on a player with such a poor fitness record.
Managerial instability has worked against Chukwueze
Since arriving in 2023, Chukwueze has played under three different managers, none of whom have fully trusted him.
Stefano Pioli was in charge when he signed, but despite making over 30 appearances, the 25-year-old was mostly used as a substitute, playing behind Christian Pulisic in the pecking order.
After Pioli’s departure, Milan appointed Paulo Fonseca, under whom Chukwueze showed promise in pre-season but failed to carry that form into the competitive campaign.
Now, with Sergio Conceição at the helm, his situation has worsened. Since Conceição’s arrival, Chukwueze has not started a single match, further highlighting his diminished role in the team.
Struggles with adapting to Milan’s style

Chukwueze’s style of play, which relies on direct attacking runs, has not translated well to Milan’s tactical system. He has often struggled to impose himself in games, leading to questions about his ability to handle the pressure of playing for a top European club.
At Villarreal, he had the freedom to exploit space and take on defenders in transition, but at Milan, he has found it difficult to adapt to the demands of a more structured system.
His inability to consistently deliver goals and assists has only compounded his problems, leaving him as a fringe player.
