Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has made a decent start to the 2026-27 season with Udinese despite the club’s struggles in Serie A.
The 27-year-old joined the Italian side in 2023 and has since become an integral part of the team, going on to play establish himself as their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
The Nigerian shot-stopper took his game to another level last season, keeping 10 clean sheets in the league and helping Udinese finish 10th. It was the club’s first top-half finish since the 2012-13 campaign.
However, Udinese have struggled to find their feet in the new season, picking up just one win from their opening five Serie A matches. They have conceded 11 goals during that run and are yet to keep a clean sheet.

Despite the team’s difficult start, Okoye has remained one of Udinese’s bright spots, producing several impressive performances between the posts.
How does Okoye rank among other Serie A goalkeepers?
According to statistics from StatMuse, Okoye has made 20 saves in five Serie A appearances for Udinese this season.
That tally places him eighth among goalkeepers with the most saves in the Italian top flight, highlighting the amount of work he has had to do despite Udinese’s early-season struggles.
Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone leads the standings with 30 saves, followed by Cagliari’s Elia Caprile, who has made 28.
Sassuolo’s Arijanet Muric, Lazio’s Christos Mandas and Frosinone’s Lorenzo Palmisani occupy third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 26 saves each.

Parma’s Edoardo Corvi and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi are sixth and seventh, having recorded 25 saves apiece, leaving Okoye just behind them in eighth place.
Interestingly, Okoye and Carnesecchi are the only two goalkeepers in the top eight who have made five appearances, according to the figures provided. This makes the Super Eagles shot-stopper’s position very impressive, given the number of goals Udinese have conceded in their opening matches.
The Nigerian international has also recorded a passing accuracy of around 76%, showing that his contribution extends beyond stopping shots and he also plays a part in Udinese’s build-up play.
What next for Okoye?
Okoye will return to action later today when Udinese face Torino in their sixth league match of the season.
The Bianconeri are looking to end a run of three consecutive league games without a win and will be eager to get maximum points as they attempt to climb the Serie A table.
