Former Ligue 1 champion calls on Eguavoen to step down as Super Eagles coach

Former Super Eagles winger and manager Samson Siasia has advised Augustine Eguavoen to step down as interim head coach of the Nigerian national team, arguing that combining the role with his position as technical director is unsustainable.

Siasia, currently without a managerial job after serving a FIFA coaching ban over match-fixing allegations, expressed his belief that Eguavoen should focus solely on one position.

The 59-year-old stepped in as interim head coach of the Super Eagles in September, following Finidi George‘s resignation in June after a string of disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Under Eguavoen, the Super Eagles qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in impressive fashion, losing just once during the campaign.

Siasia calls for Eguavoen’s resignation

However, Siasia says he still needs to be convinced that his former teammate should hold dual roles in Nigerian football.

“He cannot hold two positions at the same time. He should actually decide on which one to hold and leave the other. Eguavoen has a job already as the technical director. He should resign as Super Eagles manager and concentrate on his job.”

The former Nigeria forward also dismissed calls for a foreign manager to lead the Super Eagles, emphasizing the quality of local coaches.

“We don’t want any foreign coach here because they are not coming to do anything. We have enough good materials at home that we should not be talking about hiring a foreign coach.”

Siasia urged caution regarding Eguavoen’s long-term future with the Super Eagles, suggesting time is needed to assess the young squad under his guidance.

“As for Austin Eguavoen’s future with the Super Eagles, I will suggest that we wait a while to see how the team will be. It is a very young team.” he told Brila FM

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to announce a decision regarding a permanent head coach, with the Super Eagles not scheduled for action until March next year.
