Simon’s magic unmatched as Nantes crumble late in Saint-Étienne stalemate

Published on by

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon continued his impressive form for Nantes, scoring in their 1-1 draw against Saint-Étienne at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

However, a late equalizer from Augustine Boakye ensured that the Yellow Canaries could only leave with a single point.

Nantes adopted a counter-attacking approach, and it paid off in the 14th minute. Simon capitalized on a defensive mix-up by Saint-Étienne, intercepting a poor clearance before unleashing a powerful strike past the goalkeeper. It was his fifth league goal of the season.

Simon was a constant threat during his 71 minutes on the pitch. He managed 37 touches, completing 11 of his 16 passes (69% accuracy).

While he attempted six crosses, only one found its target, and he was unable to deliver a key pass. His sole dribble attempt was unsuccessful, but his ability to draw fouls twice helped ease pressure on his team.

A critical role in Nantes’ survival hopes

Nantes held their lead for much of the game, relying on their defensive shape to frustrate Saint-Étienne. Simon contributed defensively, recording two clearances and engaging in nine duels, winning six on the ground but none aerially.

Despite his contributions, Nantes ultimately succumbed to late pressure when Boakye struck in the 86th minute.

Simon’s tally of five goals and five assists in Ligue 1 this season highlights his importance to Nantes. At 29, his pace, physicality, and directness make him the focal point of their attack.

However, with the team sitting precariously in 15th place, Simon will need to maintain his form to help Nantes avoid relegation.
