Libya national team coach, Milutin Sredojević has been sacked just weeks before the Mediterranean Knights face Nigeria‘s Super Eagles in crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Serbian coach, who was appointed in October 2023, was shown the door following a disappointing start to the qualifying campaign.

Libya currently sits at the bottom of Group D with just one point after two rounds of matches. Micho’s side struggled to a 1-1 draw at home against Rwanda and then suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Benin despite taking an early lead.

These results have significantly jeopardized Libya's chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco next year with their current placement in the group.

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) decided to act swiftly, parting ways with Micho despite the fact that his contract had only recently been renewed for another six months.

Critics had questioned his team selection during the qualifiers, with many accusing him of failing to build a cohesive squad for Libya to challenge the likes of Rwanda and Benin

Despite leading the team to nine victories prior to the qualifiers, Micho's tactics did not pay off in competitive fixtures as the AFCON qualifiers came hence his sacking by the LFF.

Libya will now have to regroup under a new coach, with the LFF reportedly considering an indigenous appointment, before their double-header against Nigeria's Super Eagles in October.

The first leg is set for Uyo on 6 October, with the return fixture taking place in Tripoli on 14 October.
