Super Eagles: Al Ittihad rule out George Ilenikhena sale — key reason behind decision

Super Eagles target George Ilenikhena could be set to stay at Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad beyond this summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from the club this summer despite only joining Al Ittihad a few months ago. He arrived during the winter transfer window as a replacement for Karim Benzema, who joined Al Hilal.

However, Ilenikhena struggled to establish himself as a regular in the team, which intensified speculation over a possible departure this summer.

Newly promoted Premier League side Hull City and Spanish club Sevilla were both keen on signing the forward, with a potential return to Europe appearing to be on the cards.

However, Ilenikhena could now remain with the Saudi Pro League side for at least another season following a recent decision by the club.

Why Al Ittihad want to keep Ilenikhena

According to Footy-Africa, Al Ittihad have ruled out the possibility of selling the Super Eagles target this summer and want to keep him for the 2026/27 season.

The decision is mainly due to the stunning form Ilenikhena has shown at the start of the new campaign, with the club now viewing him as an important part of their plans.

The 20-year-old has scored three goals in as many matches this season after previously going seven games without finding the back of the net following his arrival at the club.

Ilenikhena opened his account with a brace in a 3-0 win over Al Najma in the League Cup before scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Al Qadsiah, which handed Al Ittihad their first league win of the season.

His pace, movement and eye for goal in those matches appear to have convinced the club to change its stance on his future, with Al Ittihad now keen to give him a more prominent role throughout the campaign.

The decision is a major blow to Hull City and Sevilla, who will now have to consider other targets if they want to strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes.

Super Eagles debut next?

Ilenikhena was born in Lagos, Nigeria, but has already represented France at Under-16 level and remains eligible to play for both countries.

Reports suggest Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been impressed by the youngster’s bright start to the season and could hand him his maiden call-up for next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

An invitation would also give Ilenikhena the opportunity to make his senior international debut for Nigeria.

At just 20, the forward represents a long-term option for the Super Eagles in the centre-forward position and could eventually emerge as a potential successor to Victor Osimhen when the Galatasaray striker retires from international football.

For now, Ilenikhena will be hoping to continue his fine start to the season when Al Ittihad face Al Fateh on Saturday.
