Super Eagles: Two traits that have put Awaziem on Konyaspor’s radar

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem could be on his way to Turkish side Konyaspor this summer as he prepares to leave Nantes, Afrik-Foot reports.

Awaziem’s future has remained uncertain since Nantes were relegated from Ligue 1 last season and the Nigerian defender is reportedly keen to move on this summer.

The 29-year-old only joined the French club from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids in 2025, but his first season was disrupted by inconsistency as Nantes endured a difficult campaign that ended in relegation.

The Super Eagles defender made 26 appearances across all competitions, but was unable to help the club avoid the drop in what turned out to be a disappointing season.

However, Awaziem has reportedly made it clear that he wants to leave Nantes, further increasing speculation over his future.

According to reports from Turkey, Konyaspor are interested in signing the Super Eagles defender this summer, with Awaziem also open to making the move.

With the Nigerian eager for a fresh challenge, there are several reasons why Konyaspor have identified him as a transfer target.

Super Eagles defender’s wealth of experience 

Awaziem is one of Nigeria’s most experienced defenders and has built an impressive career across several leagues in Europe and North America. He also has previous experience in the Turkish Super Lig.

That experience means he understands the demands of different competitions and would require little time to settle into another new environment.

Konyaspor are looking to add leadership and experience to their defence, and Awaziem fits that profile perfectly. His composure, physical presence and defensive qualities would strengthen their backline.

His arrival could also boost the club’s ambitions after they reached the Turkish Cup final last season before losing 2-1 to Trabzonspor.

Familiarity with Super Lig demands 

Another major reason behind Konyaspor’s interest is Awaziem’s familiarity with Turkish football.

The Super Eagles defender previously enjoyed spells with Rizespor and Alanyaspor, giving him valuable experience of the league and its style of play.

Because of that, he would not need much time to adapt if he completes the move. He already understands the demands of the Super Lig and could slot straight into the team.

That familiarity makes him an attractive option for Konyaspor as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Awaziem remains under contract with Nantes until 2028, but with the defender keen to leave following the club’s relegation, the French side could be willing to sanction his departure if they receive an offer that meets their valuation.
