Henry Onyekuru’s career has reached another critical juncture after the Super Eagles winger parted ways with Turkish side Gençlerbirliği by mutual consent, leaving him available on a free transfer this summer, Afrik Foot reports.

The 29-year-old endured a frustrating campaign in Ankara, failing to register a goal or assist before eventually being frozen out during the final weeks of the season.

However, despite his struggles, interest in the Nigerian remains alive, with several Turkish clubs already monitoring his situation.

As Onyekuru weighs up his next move, the decision he makes could ultimately determine whether he can revive both his club career and his hopes of returning to the Super Eagles.

A source close to the situation revealed that the former Everton winger is carefully weighing his next move after a disappointing campaign.

“Right now, he is on the radar of two clubs in the top flight in Turkey and others in the second division. His close friend Kelechi Iheanacho has moved to Bursaspor, and he might soon follow him there,” the source told Footy Africa.

For a player who was once regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest attacking talents, the next move could define what could be the final phase of his career.

After failing to register a goal or assist in 19 appearances last season, Onyekuru needs stability, regular football and a project that can help him rediscover the explosive form that earned him moves to Everton, Monaco and Galatasaray.

1. Bursaspor: Reunion with Iheanacho could reignite career

Bursaspor are the most intriguing option. The ambitious second-tier Turkish side recently completed the signing of Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho and are determined to secure promotion back to the Süper Lig at the first attempt.

Onyekuru and Iheanacho have enjoyed a close relationship dating back to their time with the Nigerian national team, and that familiarity could make adaptation easier.

More importantly, Bursaspor would likely build part of their attacking project around experienced players who have the mental capacity, alongside the ability to lead a team to promotion.

At this stage of his career, good wages, regular football and confidence may be more valuable than simply remaining playing in a top-flight league.

Erzurumspor have already been linked with the winger in recent months and could offer him something he has lacked for several years: importance.
