Super Eagles: What Celtic coach said about Iheanacho after Motherwell win

Celtic head coach Martin O’Neill has shared his thoughts on Kelechi Iheanacho’s performance in Wednesday’s dramatic win over Motherwell, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles forward once again grabbed the headlines after scoring a stoppage-time winner to help the Hoops to a 3-2 victory over Motherwell, keeping their title hopes alive heading into the final day of the season.

Celtic also extended their winning run to seven matches across all competitions, although the encounter was far from straightforward. Motherwell took the lead in the 15th minute through Elliott Watt, but Daizen Maeda restored parity for Celtic before halftime.

Benjamin Nguren then put Celtic ahead early in the second half and it looked as though the visitors would hold on for the win before Liam Gordon equalized late on for the home side.

However, Celtic were awarded a controversial penalty in stoppage time for handball and Iheanacho stepped up calmly to convert from the spot and seal all three points for his side.

Martin O’Neill hails Iheanacho’s super-sub display against Motherwell

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho took his tally for the season to eight goals with another impressive display. The Nigerian has now scored five goals in his last eight matches, including decisive strikes against Dundee FC and Hibernian in the league, as well as a late brace against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup semifinal that sent Celtic into the final.

Speaking after the match, Martin O’Neill praised Iheanacho’s impact and composure under pressure, particularly for the decisive penalty.

“Iheanacho has been terrific for us with the little cameo roles that he’s done,” the Celtic boss said post-match.

“He’s had a really frustrating time this season with hamstring problems, but he has come up big for us in these weeks, absolutely big, and he was the one taking the penalty.

“I was delighted that he was the one who was taking it.”

Celtic are now just one win away from successfully defending their league title. Victory against Hearts at home in their final league game of the season would see them crowned champions once again.

The Hoops will then turn their attention to the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic, with hopes of completing a domestic double still alive.
