Super Eagles-eligible forward puts up stellar performance as Ajax thrash Zwolle

Super Eagles-eligible forward Chuba Akpom was once again on target for Ajax in their 3-1 away win over PEC Zwolle at the MAC 3 Park Stadion on Sunday.

The 28-year-old got Ajax's second of the day in the 25th minute to consolidate Kristian Hlynsson's earlier strike.

In the 72nd minute, Filip Krastev pulled one back for the hosts, but Akpom struck once again in the 84th minute to score Ajax's third and secure the win for the visitors.

Akpom has so far scored three goals with one assist in his last two games for Ajax. Prior to the international break, he scored and provided an assist in Ajax's 2-2 draw with Sparta Rotterdam.

The England-born forward seems to be finding his feet after tumultuous start to his Ajax career. Akpom was the top scorer in the English Championship last season with a whopping 28 goals in 40 league matches.

He also won the Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards.

What are Chuba Akpom's goal-scoring stats for Ajax in the 2023/24 season?

Since his arrival from Middlesbrough August last year, Akpom has made 19 Eredivise appearances and can boast of netting eight times.

In the Europa League, he has scored three goals in six games and has recorded a goal in one game in the KNVB Cup.

Where does Akpom's international future lie?

Born in London to parents of Nigerian descent, Akpom finds himself at a crossroads regarding his international football career.

Despite representing England at the youth level, Akpom's eligibility to play for Nigeria's Super Eagles remains intact, leaving questions about where his international future lies.

On March 28, 2017, there were reports indicating that Akpom was nearing a potential move to join the Nigerian national team, alongside Nottingham Forests' Ola Aina, following discussions with Amaju Pinnick, the former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In September 2019, he affirmed his intention to play for the Super Eagles . Speaking to BBC Sport, Akpom expressed, “It was a personal choice. I identify strongly with Nigeria, as does my entire family, and it would be a great honor to represent my country.”

As Akpom continues to excel in the Eredivise, the decision regarding his international allegiance looms large.

With ties to both England and Nigeria, Akpom faces a significant choice that will shape his footballing journey in the years to come.

Where he ultimately chooses to pledge his allegiance remains a topic of intrigue and speculation in the footballing world.
