Eric Chelle has vowed to never toe the Jose Mourinho line as Super Eagles coach.
As Nigeria fans continue to try to come to terms with his unorthodox midfield diamond system, the Malian has provided a handy explanation of his ideas and outlook. The 47-year-old took charge of the three-time African champions in January, and is unbeaten in the role over the course of four matches at the helm.
In spite of this, the Super Eagles’ situation in 2026 World Cup qualifying remains perilous, and it is understood that they will need to be perfect over the course of the final four matches to stand a chance of reaching the Mundial.

Eric Chelle’s philosophy, in his own words
Speaking to Onze Mondial, the former Mali boss explained his preference for a diamond in midfield, one which forgoes width in favour of central presence.
“I like to play with two strikers,” he said, “(and also) to have the numerical superiority in midfield. Because first of all, there aren't many teams that play with a diamond.”
Chelle also explained the underlying principles of his game style, contrasting his approach with that of legendary manager Jose Mourinho who, he believes, focuses on the opposition.

“In terms of my game plan, movement is essential, both defensively and offensively. For me, the ideal would be for my team to be in perpetual motion. When we don't have the ball, I want us to always try to get it back at the feet of the opponent by pressing very high and constantly.
“Some coaches adapt their tactics to the opponent, they try to counter the opponent. A bit like what the great coach Mourinho did. So his ideal was to find the weaknesses of the opponent and counter the opponent. I don't want to counter the opponent, I want to impose my game and my philosophy.”
September’s qualifiers will certainly test Chelle’s commitment to his philosophy, as the Super Eagles face Rwanda and South Africa at home and away respectively.
