The Nigeria Super Eagles secured the 2026 Unity Cup on Saturday following two commanding performances against Zimbabwe and Jamaica, Afrik-Foot reports.
Nigeria defeated the Zimbabwean Warriors 2-0 in the tournament opener before dismissing Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz 3-0 in the final.
Coach Eric Chelle opted for an experimental squad, which included 13 new faces. Much like their 2025 AFCON campaign, the team grew into the tournament, with their final performance proving significantly sharper than their opening display.

Although winning the 2026 Unity Cup was a major achievement, the tournament also provided several promising takeaways for the future.
1. NPFL Players Earn Well-Deserved Acclaim
Of the 27 players called up for the 2026 Unity Cup, 13 were drawn from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Two of these players—Chibueze Oputa and Kenneth Igboke—featured prominently, while four others earned their senior international debuts.

Oputa and Igboke were brilliant at the full-back positions. They rarely faltered defensively and combined well with the center-backs and midfielders.
It was also good to see Chibuike Nwaiwu shine and establish himself as a leader at the back. Nwaiwu is an NPFL success story, having spent three years with Heartland and Enyimba before moving to Europe.
2. Femi Azeez Shines as a New Option

Receiving his first call-up for the Unity Cup, Femi Azeez was outstanding throughout the tournament.
In the opener against Zimbabwe, he scored both goals to secure the win, and in the final against Jamaica, he provided the assist for Terem Moffi’s goal.
Although Coach Chelle had some criticism of Azeez after the Zimbabwe match, the forward took the feedback in stride and delivered a stronger performance against Jamaica. Given these displays, it is clear that Azeez has earned his place in future Super Eagles squads.
3. Eric Chelle Driving A Tactical Identity

During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, we witnessed the Super Eagles find their rhythm game-by-game. It was the first time Coach Chelle’s tactical blueprint became clear to Nigerian fans.
The Franco-Malian manager favors a high press, forcing turnovers and disrupting opponents’ flow. This identity was on full display during both the AFCON and this Unity Cup despite the short time that he had with the team in London.
It has been a long time since Nigerian fans could confidently predict how the team would set up and approach their opponents. They will be hoping that Chelle remains at the helm to continue building the team.
