Super Eagles goalkeeper battle: 3 things Okonkwo must do to beat Nwabali & Okoye

Arthur Okonkwo has another chance to push for the Super Eagles’ No. 1 shirt, but his two clean sheets in international football will not automatically put him ahead of Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper has been recalled by Eric Chelle for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Charlton Athletic confirmed his call-up after he started the Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Zimbabwe and 3-0 victory against Jamaica in May.

The challenge now is much tougher because these are competitive qualifiers, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles playing Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Nwabali has built a strong case through his experience with Nigeria, while Okoye brings regular Serie A football with Udinese. Okoye has started all three of Udinese’s league matches this season, making eight saves from 11 shots on target. If Okonkwo wants to move ahead of both, these are the three areas that could decide Chelle’s choice.

Make his distribution a weapon

Okonkwo cannot win this battle only with saves. He needs to help the Super Eagles start attacks from the back. Chelle’s goalkeeper must be comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, finding Nigeria’s defenders and playing accurate longer passes when opponents push forward. A poor clearance against an aggressive team can quickly put the defence under pressure.

Okonkwo’s 6-foot-5 frame gives him a strong physical presence, but his decision-making with the ball will be just as important. If he can consistently turn saves into quick attacks, he gives Chelle another reason to trust him.

Own his penalty area

The next step is commanding the box. Nigeria will not always face opponents who give the goalkeeper many shots. Against Zimbabwe, Okonkwo had a relatively quiet night before producing an important save after the break. Against Jamaica, another low stop helped preserve Nigeria’s advantage.

In AFCON qualifying, there will be moments when crosses, corners and loose balls create danger without producing a clean shot. Okonkwo must come for the right deliveries, communicate loudly with his defenders and make decisions early.

That could separate him from Nwabali and Okoye when the goalkeeping positions are closely matched.

Deliver when the qualifiers count

This is the hardest test. Okonkwo’s two Nigeria appearances came in the Unity Cup. His next opportunity could come in an official AFCON qualifying campaign, where every mistake can affect Nigeria’s route to the 2027 AFCON.

The first test comes at 4pm GMT against Madagascar in Uyo on September 25, followed by another 4pm GMT kick-off against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

If Okonkwo convinces the national team handlers that he can produce more clean sheets, make difficult saves when needed and stay composed in competitive games, Chelle will have a serious selection decision to make. Okonkwo’s next opportunity could turn a promising international start into a genuine challenge to Nwabali and Okoye.
