Super Eagles star’s EPL promotion party delayed as Sheffield Wednesday hold Coventry

Coventry City’s long-awaited promotion party was put on hold after a stubborn Sheffield Wednesday side battled to a goalless draw at the CBS Arena on Saturday afternoon, Afrik-Foot reports.

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka delivered a disciplined but quieter performance in midfield as the Sky Blues kept their fifth clean sheet in their last seven games.

The Nigerian international, who has been one of Coventry’s most influential players in recent weeks, started in his usual holding role alongside Matt Grimes and helped control possession as the home side dominated the ball. Coventry finished with 69% possession, but struggled to turn that control into goals against a determined visiting defence.

Onyeka played 82 minutes and focused largely on breaking up play and keeping the tempo steady. Unlike his recent outing when he netted a fine goal in the 3-2 win over Derby County, this was a more restrained display. He did not register a goal or assist, but his positional awareness and work rate ensured Coventry remained in control for long periods.

The result leaves Coventry top of the Championship table on 85 points, still firmly on course for promotion to the Premier League. However, they missed the chance to seal it this weekend, as three points would have taken them to the brink depending on other results.

Coventry City dominate but Wednesday stand firm

From the opening whistle, Coventry looked the more likely side, though they were nearly caught out early on when goalkeeper Carl Rushworth hesitated in possession. Tayo Adaramola almost capitalised, but could not bring the ball under control.

The home side gradually found their rhythm, with Milan van Ewijk producing a lively run into the box midway through the first half, only to see his effort deflected away. From the resulting corner, Liam Kitching’s header was dramatically cleared off the line by Svante Ingelsson, before Brandon Thomas-Asante headed over from Haji Wright’s cross.

Despite Coventry’s earlier 5-0 win over Wednesday this season, this encounter proved far more difficult. The visitors, already relegated, showed resilience and organisation, frustrating the league leaders at every turn.

Jack Rudoni, the hero from the recent win over Derby, came close again but scuffed his effort from close range, much to the relief of the travelling supporters.

Sheffield Wednesday also had moments of threat. Early in the second half, Jaden Heskey broke down the right and crossed for Jerry Yates, who guided his effort just wide. Later, Adaramola continued to cause problems, setting up Ingelsson, who fired over the bar.

Coventry responded through Ephron Mason-Clark, who forced a save from Pierce Charles after cutting in from the left. The home side also had strong appeals for a penalty waved away when Van Ewijk’s cross struck Adaramola’s arm, but referee Matthew Donohue was unmoved.

Set-pieces, usually a strength for Coventry this season, nearly provided the breakthrough. Substitute Josh Eccles headed Matt Grimes’ free-kick inches wide, while Ellis Simms saw a late overhead kick deflected just past the post.

Tensions briefly flared late on when Kitching clashed with a member of the Wednesday medical staff during a stoppage, underlining the growing frustration inside a packed stadium of over 31,000 fans.

After the final whistle, Coventry manager Frank Lampard admitted the pressure of the occasion may have affected his players.

“I think there’s understandable elements to the game, there’s a bit of tension to do that and a lot of the players are probably living this situation for the first time. When are you going to do it, the expectancy to do it, and maybe there was a small effect on the game.

“To not win when three points are there, you create the chances we did but without having the usual snappy sharpness we have at the top of the pitch makes it a bit frustrating.

“We obviously created enough to win the game but we didn’t quite do it, and you have to credit the opposition for making it difficult for you.

“When a team has nothing to gain, they also have nothing to lose. I think they’ve got a manager that’s very driven, trying to do his job as well as he possibly can, so they were always going to make it as difficult as they possibly could.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the breakthrough even with the possession, the crosses and the chances that we had.

“We normally score here, we normally win games here, so we have to keep a bit of perspective. But specifically for the players, because I know there’s a pressure and everyone wants to release the pressure by getting it done and now we have to move onto the next one.”

For Onyeka and Coventry, promotion remains within touching distance.

Coventry City could finally get the job done when they make the trip to face Blackburn Rovers on Friday.
