Super Eagles set to welcome captain back for Unity Cup

Ahmed Musa is back in the Super Eagles fold and will captain Nigeria at the 2025 Unity Cup in London later this month. His club, Kano Pillars, confirmed the news via social media on Monday.

The 32-year-old, who last featured in a pre-AFCON friendly against Guinea in January 2024, returns to a squad expected to blend youth and experience.

Musa, after a quiet spell away from international duty, has rebuilt his form in the domestic league with eight goals and two assists for Pillars this season, numbers that speak to his enduring quality.

His recall comes at a time when Nigeria are preparing for the next phase of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, and his presence offers both leadership and continuity.

Unity Cup offers a window into Super Eagles’ next phase

Running from May 26 to 31 at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, the Unity Cup will feature Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago in a celebration of Afro-Caribbean football culture.

Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles begin with a clash against eternal rivals Ghana on May 28, a fixture that rarely lacks tension, regardless of stakes.

While not FIFA-sanctioned, the Unity Cup serves as a proving ground. With qualifiers resuming in September, it offers Chelle a chance to test systems and assess personnel, particularly with many Europe-based stars unavailable.

Musa, omitted from recent squads, now returns as a guiding presence. His role may not hinge on playing time, but on influence, providing structure in a side that could feature debutants. For Chelle, having a captain who understands both the shirt’s weight and the game’s rhythm may prove invaluable
