Super Eagles transfer: Ranking top 5 clubs chasing Basel winger Philip Otele

Super Eagles winger Philip Otele is heading towards another transfer decision after returning to FC Basel from a loan spell at Hamburger SV, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 27-year-old Nigerian is under contract with Basel until June 30, 2028, but the Swiss club are prepared to sell him this summer. Saudi Pro League club Al Fateh currently have the strongest position in the race. The Saudi side have agreed personal terms with Otele but saw a €3 million offer rejected by Basel, who want a guaranteed €4 million fee.

That leaves the deal open, with European clubs also interested in the winger. Ipswich Town, Marseille, Union Berlin, Lecce and Derby County are among the clubs linked with Otele, although their situations differ in terms of transfer progress and what each move could offer his Super Eagles career.

Otele has good reason to attract attention. He scored nine goals in 18 Swiss Super League appearances during his first loan spell at Basel in 2024-25, helping the club win the league and Swiss Cup. Basel then signed him permanently from Al Wahda in July 2025. He scored five league goals in 20 appearances in the 2025-26 season and added two goals in seven Europa League matches.

His January move to Hamburg gave him another chance in one of Europe’s major leagues. He made seven Bundesliga appearances, starting six, and scored once while also providing an assist.

5. Derby County

Derby County offer Otele perhaps the clearest route to regular football. The English Championship is physically demanding, with 46 league matches in a normal season, and Derby have been linked with a move for the Nigerian winger as they look to add attacking quality.

Otele’s direct running and ability to play on either wing would fit a league where quick transitions and one-on-one battles are common. His record in Romania also shows that he can produce goals rather than simply provide width. He scored 18 goals in 40 appearances for CFR Cluj during the 2023-24 season and shared the Liga I scoring title that campaign.

The problem is the level of competition. Derby would give him a strong chance of playing every week, but the Championship does not offer the same European exposure as Serie A, Ligue 1 or the Bundesliga.

Verdict: The safest option for minutes, but the weakest of the five in terms of competition level.

4. Lecce

Lecce could give Otele the chance to prove himself in Serie A. The Italian club have shown interest in the Basel winger, with reports in July stating that the club had begun checking the conditions of a possible transfer. A loan or permanent deal was being considered.

The move would also test another part of Otele’s game. Serie A demands discipline from wide attackers, especially when teams defend in compact formations. Otele would have to combine his dribbling and attacking instincts with defensive work and tactical awareness.

His previous experience across Romania, Switzerland, Germany and the UAE means he would not be entering European football for the first time. He has also already shown that he can score in different systems, including his 18-goal campaign with CFR Cluj.

Verdict: A strong choice if Otele wants to improve tactically while playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

3. Union Berlin

Union Berlin offer Otele a particularly interesting route because of his previous experience in Germany. Otele spent the second half of last term with Hamburger SV after joining on loan from Basel on February 2. Hamburg’s sporting director described him as a natural winger who brings flair, goal threat and the willingness to take defenders on. That experience could reduce the adjustment needed if he returns to the Bundesliga.

Union have also provided a successful pathway for Nigerian attackers in recent years. Taiwo Awoniyi became an important Super Eagles striker after his spell in Berlin, while the Bundesliga has also provided a platform for players such as Victor Boniface. Otele would therefore enter a league he has already experienced, but with the chance to play a larger role.

Verdict: A very good football fit, especially if Otele wants to build on his Bundesliga experience rather than start again in a new country.

2. Marseille

Marseille would represent a major step up in profile. The French club compete at the top end of Ligue 1 and regularly play in European competitions. That would put Otele on a much larger stage than Basel and could give him more opportunities to attract attention ahead of future Super Eagles selections.

His style also makes the move interesting. Otele is comfortable attacking defenders from wide positions, carrying the ball forward and cutting inside. Those qualities would be useful in a Marseille side that expects its attacking players to create chances against teams that defend deep. The competition for places would be tougher than at Derby or Lecce, but the rewards could be much greater if he establishes himself.

Ipswich Town rank first among the five European options because of what the move could mean for Otele’s career in England. The winger has already played in Germany, Switzerland, Romania and the UAE, but a move to Ipswich would give him another opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League.

There is an additional attraction for Otele as a Nigerian international. Regular Premier League football would give him a much larger weekly audience and expose him to a higher level of competition.
