Super Falcons duo make CAF’s WAFCON Group Stage XI: Deserved or not?

Published on by

The performances of two Super Falcons players have been honoured following the conclusion of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group Stage.

On Wednesday, CAF made known their picks of the most impressive players so far in the tournament. Unsurprisingly, Zambia’s Barbra Banda leads the line, and there are places in the XI for the likes of Ghizlane Chebbak, Racheal Kundananji and Jane Refiloe.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have the second-highest representation, with two players selected by CAF. The nine-time African champions are not only unbeaten over the course of their opening three matches, but have yet to concede.

Do Super Falcons Ajibade and Plumptre deserve their nods?

Making the cut are Ashleigh Plumptre and captain Rasheedat Ajibade. The latter has started every match so far, while the former was rested for the final group match against Algeria.

On account of Nigeria’s miserly defence, it is easy enough to see why Plumptre has been picked out. The Ittihad defender has not only been solid defensively, but has impressed with her passing going forward. She has also linked up well with left-winger Rinsola Babajide, who has been one of the revelations of the WAFCON so far.

The Ajibade call is a little more difficult to understand. While she was given the Player of the Match award against Botswana, the decision was widely panned. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder is brilliant on her day, but has been underwhelming so far in Morocco, leading many to wonder how she has made this XI.
