Super Falcons starlet Opeyemi Ajakaiye has revealed how she took a bold step in a move to rescue her football career.
After a challenging time at Madrid CFF in Spain, Ajakaiye embarked on a fresh chapter in the United States, joining Kansas City Current before heading out on loan to Carolina Ascent FC.
But why leave Madrid CFF for this new opportunity?
For Ajakaiye, the move wasn’t just about changing teams—it was about finding a place where she could thrive again.
Spain struggles & Super Falcons support structure
At Madrid CFF, despite her impressive form in Nigeria’s NWFL, the striker struggled to secure consistent playing time.
“The language was a major barrier for me, and not playing at Madrid CFF made things even harder,” she said in an exclusive chat with Sportsboom
“Back in Nigeria, in the NWFL, I was a regular starter, undisputed. I’d mingle with friends, talk about life, and share advice about games.
“But in Spain, even though people were friendly, it was difficult to make connections because of the language barrier.
“It was a tough time for me. I wasn’t playing, and I wanted to play. That’s why I made the move to the USA. I needed to get back to doing what I love.”
During her tough time in Spain, Ajakaiye leaned on the guidance of her Super Falcons mentors, Rasheedat Ajibade and Monday Gift.
According to the 18-year-old forward, their support helped her stay motivated and focused on her goals.
“Thanks to Rasheedat Ajibade because she was always talking to me, mentoring and motivating me.
“She kept telling me not to mind whatever was being done to me and not to care about negative comments.”
Her determination is now guiding her as she sets her sights on making a strong impact in the U.S.
