Where Taiwo Awoniyi ranks among Coventry City’s all-time goalscorers

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is on the verge of joining Coventry City from Nottingham Forest ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The newly promoted Premier League side will reportedly pay £17 million to bring the Nigerian forward to the club as they continue their summer spending spree ahead of their first season in the Premier League in 25 years.

Frank Lampard’s side finished top of the Championship last season to secure promotion to the Premier League, and they will be keen to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. As a result, Coventry have been strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Awoniyi, meanwhile, has had an uncertain future at Nottingham Forest for some time and found himself on the fringes of the squad. His proposed move to Coventry could give him the opportunity to rediscover his best form.

He will also link up with Super Eagles teammate Frank Onyeka, who completed a permanent move to Coventry earlier this summer after an impressive loan spell during the second half of last season, helping the club secure promotion.

Coventry City’s top five all-time goalscorers

According to statistics from Transfermarkt, Gary McSheffrey is Coventry City’s leading goalscorer, having scored 73 goals in 281 appearances across all competitions.

Dion Dublin is second on the list with 72 goals in 170 appearances, while Ian Wallace follows with 58 goals. Mick Ferguson is fourth with 56 goals, while Matty Godden completes the top five with 50 goals.

However, when looking at their total professional career goals rather than just their goals for Coventry City, the ranking changes slightly.

McSheffrey scored 106 senior career goals, while Dublin finished his career with 131 goals. Wallace scored 107, Ferguson managed 70, and Godden has 143 professional goals.

Where does Taiwo Awoniyi rank?

Awoniyi has scored 79 goals in his professional career and would therefore rank inside the top five when compared with the career goals of Coventry City’s leading all-time scorers.

The Super Eagles striker would sit fifth, behind Godden, Dublin, Wallace and McSheffrey, while ahead of Ferguson.

The 29-year-old will now be hoping to make a strong start to life at Coventry and add to his career total as he looks to revive his career.

Awoniyi scored 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions for Nottingham Forest. He also enjoyed a memorable run during the 2023-24 Premier League season when he scored in seven consecutive league games, setting a new club record for Forest.

His first opportunity to make an impression could come against Arsenal next weekend in Coventry City’s opening Premier League game of the 2026-27 season.
