The Bundesliga encounter between Augsburg and Bayer Leverkusen saw Nigeria's Super Eagles duo Frank Onyeka and Nathan Tella go head-to-head at the WWK Arena.
Reigning champions, Leverkusen, claimed a 2-0 victory on Saturday, with Tella delivering an eye-catching performance.
The match began with Leverkusen asserting dominance early on. Onyeka was booked in the 12th minute for a mistimed challenge as he tried to thwart Leverkusen's attacking rhythm.
Just two minutes later, Martin Terrier broke the deadlock for the visitors, thanks to a precise assist from Granit Xhaka, who set up Jeremie Frimpong’s cross that found Terrier unmarked.
Tella nearly added to the scoreline in the 22nd minute, forcing a strong save from Augsburg's keeper, Labrović. However, his contributions paid off late in the game, as his clever play set up Florian Wirtz for a composed finish in the 85th minute, sealing the points for Leverkusen.
The assist marked the former Burnley forward's second in the league this season.
Onyeka & Tella’s performance in numbers
Onyeka worked tirelessly for Augsburg, completing 87 minutes before being substituted. The Brentford-owned midfielder displayed precision in passing, completing 25 of 29 attempts at an impressive 86% accuracy.
He engaged in 8 ground duels, winning 4, and made 2 interceptions and 1 clearance. Onyeka also attempted one successful dribble but struggled to contribute offensively, with no shots or key passes.
On the other hand, Nathan Tella’s lively performance kept Augsburg’s defenders on edge. He attempted four dribbles, successfully completing three, and was a consistent presence in duels, winning 6 of 9 on the ground and one aerial battle.
The former Arsenal youngster also completed 14 of 16 passes (88% accuracy), delivered one key pass, and created chances in critical moments.
