Terem Moffi transfer: 3 reasons Hamburg can sign Super Eagles striker cheaply

Hamburger SV are closing in on a deal to sign Nigerian striker Terem Moffi from OGC Nice, with the 27-year-old forward reportedly agreeing personal terms with the newly promoted Bundesliga club, Afrik-Foot reports.

The move would give Hamburg an experienced Super Eagles striker, but it would also come at a much lower cost than Moffi’s price tag just a few years ago, as per Sport.de.

Nice signed Besiktas-linked Moffi from Lorient in 2023 for a package worth €25 million. His market value later reached the same figure during the 2023-24 season after strong performances for club and country.

Transfermarkt now values the striker, one of Nigeria’s finest in Ligue 1 history, at just €8 million. That sharp fall has several clear reasons. Three factors in particular have made Moffi a much more affordable target for Hamburg.

A serious injury changed his career path

Moffi’s biggest setback came with an anterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out for a long period during the 2024-25 campaign. The injury came at a difficult stage of his career. After reaching a €25 million market value, Moffi suddenly had to spend months away from competitive football.

The lack of regular appearances affected both his form and his value. His price dropped towards €10 million as doubts grew over his fitness and ability to return to his previous level. Moffi eventually returned, but he was unable to rebuild the momentum he had created during his best years in France.

His Ligue 1 record had previously been strong. He scored 14 goals in 2020-21, eight in 2021-22, 18 in 2022-23 and 11 in 2023-24. That record explains why Nice once paid €25 million for him. His recent injury problems explain why Hamburg can now pursue him for a much smaller fee.

His relationship with Nice fans collapsed

Moffi’s problems at Nice were not limited to injuries. The relationship between the Nigerian and sections of the club’s supporters broke down after a difficult period for the French side. At the end of 2025, Moffi was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with Nice supporters after a tense relegation battle.

The incident badly damaged his position at the club. Nice subsequently moved towards an exit plan for the striker. He was pushed away from the first-team picture, trained with the reserve group and was left out of pre-season matchday squads.

That situation has made a permanent transfer increasingly logical for all sides. Nice no longer have the same reason to hold out for a huge fee, while Moffi needs a club where he can rebuild his career and play regularly. Hamburg could provide that opportunity.

Porto did not make his loan permanent

Moffi’s temporary move to FC Porto offered another chance to revive his career, but it did not produce the financial comeback Nice wanted. The Nigerian joined the Portuguese champions on loan for the second half of last season. He made 15 appearances and scored twice.

Those numbers were not enough to convince Porto to activate the option to sign him permanently. Instead of returning to Porto with his market value restored, the Super Eagles forward went back to Nice with his future still uncertain.

That combination of a serious knee injury, a broken relationship with Nice supporters and an unsuccessful Porto loan has changed Moffi’s transfer market completely. Hamburg can now pursue a striker who has already proved he can score goals in Ligue 1, but without paying anything close to the €25 million Nice spent on him in 2023.
