Super Eagles: FIFA rule blocking Tim Iroegbunam’s Nigeria switch

Published on by

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will have to wait beyond the November international break before handing Tim Iroegbunam his Nigeria debut.

The Hull City midfielder, who is keen to wear the green and white colours, is still awaiting FIFA approval to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

Iroegbunam is one of a few players born and raised abroad who are on the radar of coach Chelle, as the Malian tactician continues his rebuild of the Super Eagles.

A defensive midfielder honing his talents in the English Premier League, Iroegbunam is seen in some quarters as the long-term replacement for captain Wilfred Ndidi. Smart with his position, strong in the tackle and blessed with a workaholic engine, the former Aston Villa lad will be a perfect fit for Chelle’s preferred diamond midfield.

However, it may take until the new year before he plays for the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles switch on for Iroegbunam

A report by OwnGoal suggests that Iroegbunam has begun the process of switching his allegiance from England to Nigeria. The former England youth international has submitted the required documents and obtained a Nigerian passport.

However, FIFA is yet to approve his switch, meaning he will miss Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Tanzania.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, Iroegbunam represented England at youth level before deciding to play for Nigeria. The 23-year-old reportedly agreed to the switch after holding talks with Chelle, who has been working to convince players of Nigerian descent to represent the Super Eagles.

A family member with experience in the process is also helping the midfielder with his application. However, he must wait for FIFA’s approval before he can be considered for Nigeria’s squad.

Why Iroegbunam could strengthen Chelle’s midfield

Iroegbunam’s absence will be a setback for Chelle, who could have another midfield talent once the clearance comes through.

The former Everton player joined Hull City in the summer and has gradually earned more playing time under head coach Sergej Jakirović. He scored his first league goal for the club against Ipswich Town on October 31, helping Hull secure a 2-2 draw.

The midfielder combines physical strength with aggressive pressing and the ability to carry the ball forward under pressure. He can play as a defensive midfielder or in a box-to-box role, giving Chelle a wide range of qualities in the centre of the pitch.

Iroegbunam could also form a useful partnership with Wilfred Ndidi. While Ndidi is known for breaking up opposition attacks, the Hull City midfielder could offer more forward runs and help move the ball into attacking areas.

At the moment, though, Chelle must plan for the Tanzania qualifiers without him. Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika are available for Chelle ahead of the Tanzania double-header.

Iroegbunam’s Super Eagles debut, though, will have to wait until FIFA approves his change of international allegiance.
