3 key reasons Tochukwu Nnadi must leave Marseille to save his Super Eagles future

Tochukwu Nnadi looked to have found his place at Olympique de Marseille by the end of last season, Afrik-Foot reports.

After spending endless weeks waiting for an opportunity following his February 2026 move from Belgian club Zulte Waregem for €6 million, the Nigerian midfielder finally broke into the starting lineup and ended the Ligue 1 campaign with four impressive performances that changed the way supporters viewed him.

The 22-year-old had endured a frustrating beginning in France. Under Roberto De Zerbi and later Habib Beye, he managed only 34 minutes across his first four substitute appearances. Everything changed on April 26 when Beye handed him his first competitive start against OGC Nice.

Nnadi responded with a mature display in an important league fixture for Marseille. He supplied the assist for Marseille’s goal with a perfectly delivered cross in the 66th minute, finished with 69 touches, completed 45 of his 51 passes for an 85 percent success rate, created two chances, won six duels, recovered the ball four times and made two successful tackles.

That performance earned him a regular place in the team. He completed the full 90 minutes against FC Nantes, played 66 minutes against Le Havre AC and followed it with another energetic display in a 3-1 victory over Stade Rennais. His late-season form also earned him a recall to the Super Eagles, where he started Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal, while reports in France linked him with interest from Premier League clubs.

But only a few months later, the situation has changed again. Marseille’s summer rebuild under Bruno Génésio has created fresh obstacles that could seriously reduce Nnadi’s playing time, making a transfer increasingly attractive for both his club and international career.

Marseille’s midfield leaves little room for Nnadi

The biggest challenge facing Nnadi is the fierce competition that exists in Marseille’s midfield.

The French giants have not signed any player in central midfield this summer but still boast experienced options. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg already occupies the holding midfield role that best suits Nnadi, while the presence of Quinten Timber, Angel Gomes and Hamed Traorè makes the French club well-stoked in central positions. Head coach Génésio is working hard to make these lot happy, making it much harder for younger players to secure regular starts.

The change in coaching situation has not helped matters. After working under Roberto De Zerbi and Habib Beye in his first six months at the club, Nnadi is now adjusting to Bruno Génésio’s methods. Every managerial change brings new tactical ideas, fresh selection decisions and different priorities. During preseason, Génésio has focused on integrating his established stars and testing combinations ahead of the new Ligue 1 campaign, leaving fewer opportunities for players fighting to establish themselves.

Why leaving Marseille could secure his Super Eagles future

Regular football is no longer just about club success for Nnadi. It could determine whether he becomes a permanent member of Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad.

His own experience over the past year proves how important club minutes have become. During his difficult first months at Marseille, he disappeared from the national team picture because he was hardly playing. Only after starting Marseille’s final four Ligue 1 matches did he earn his return to Nigeria’s squad for the June international window.

Remaining on Marseille’s bench would make another recall much more difficult. Nigeria’s midfield has become a really competitive area of the squad, with several established internationals and emerging talents competing for limited places. Players who feature every week naturally build stronger statistics through tackles, interceptions, recoveries, passing accuracy and overall match rhythm. Without consistent minutes, Nnadi risks falling behind rivals who are playing regularly across Europe’s top leagues.

A move to a club where he is guaranteed a starting role would give him the platform to continue developing. Whether in the Premier League or another major European competition, playing every week would improve both his confidence and his standing with the Super Eagles coaching staff ahead of future AFCON and World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Marseille remain one of France’s traditional big clubs, but they are also known for frequent managerial changes and regular squad rebuilds. After already working under three different coaches within months of arriving, Nnadi may benefit more from joining a club that offers stability, a defined tactical role and consistent first-team football.

His breakthrough at Marseille proved he belongs at the highest level. His next challenge is finding a club where those performances become the rule rather than the exception.
