Top 10 Super Eagles stars with most Bundesliga games: Oliseh 4th, Okocha 8th

Nigerian players have long left their mark on German football, with several Super Eagles stars racking up well over a century of Bundesliga appearances across their careers, Afrik-Foot reports.

The German top-flight has played hosts to many Nigerian stars in the past, and even presently. A key example is Raphael Onyedika, who is set to join Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

At that same club, Super Eagles legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha made his legend, and his games there ensured that he makes this list.

Here are the top 10 Nigerians with the most league games in Bundesliga history, per Transfermarkt.

Super Eagles Stars With Most Bundesliga Games

1. Kevin Akpoguma – 179 appearances

Akpoguma tops the list by a distance and is not much of a surprise, as although he is a Nigerian international, he is German born and bred.

The centre-back started building his appearances since making his Bundesliga debut in October 2017 and established himself as a reliable player for Hoffenheim until last season, when he left.

2. Jonathan Akpoborie – 144 appearances

Akpoborie is one of the earliest Nigerian success stories in the Bundesliga. He made his debut back in February 1996 playing for Hansa Rostock.

He went on to build a reputation as a prolific centre-forward across spells with two more clubs including Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.

3. Victor Agali – 143 appearances

Victor Agali’s Bundesliga career started in August 1998 with Hansa Rostock. He also went on to play for Schalke 04 after a very impressive three years that saw him register 20 goals and 19 assists in 98 games.

Agali contributed 32 goals and 24 assists in 143 Bundesliga games in all.

4. Sunday Oliseh – 139 appearances

The former Super Eagles captain started his Bundesliga career in August 1995 with FC Koln, and the defensive midfielder went on to become one of Nigeria’s most respected exports in Germany.

Although he left Koln for Ajax two years later, he returned to Germany for spells with Borussia Dortmund and Bochum.

5. Anthony Ujah – 136 appearances

Anthony Ujah spent most of his time in Germany. His journey started in August 2011 with Mainz, and he went on to play for three other clubs, FC Koln, Werder Bremen, and Union Berlin.

Throughout his time in the Bundesliga, Ujah registered 30 goals and ten assists in 136 appearances.

6. Chinedu Obasi – 100 appearances

Obasi reached the century mark in Bundesliga appearances after making his debut in 2007 at Hoffenheim. The retired Super Eagles star featured in 100 games for Hoffenheim and Schalke, and he contributed 17 goals and nine assists in total.

7. Jordan Torunarigha – 97 appearances

Jordan Torunarigha is one if the active players on this list. Torunarigha made his Bundesliga debut in February 2017 with Hertha Berlin. But he left for Belgian side Gent five years later.

He eventually returned to Hamburg last season, and featured in 24 games in the run-up to their 13-place finish.

8. Jay-Jay Okocha – 90 appearances

Okocha is one of Nigeria’s most iconic footballers, and he made his Bundesliga debut for Eintracht Frankfurt in September 1992.

He remains one the most gifted dribbler that football has ever seen. He was a global star. Okocha spent five years at Werder Bremen, contributing 25 goals and 18 assists in 116 games across all competitions, before moving to Fenerbahce.

9. Felix Agu – 75 appearances

The Werder Bremen left-back made his Bundesliga debut in November 2020 and quickly established himself as a regular starter for the club.

His appearances would have been way higher if not for his consistent injury problems.

10. Leon Balogun – 75 appearances

Rounding out the top 10 is former Super Eagles defender Balogun. His Bundesliga career started in April 2009 with Hannover 96. He also went on to play for Werder Bremen and Mainz before moving to the Premier League with Brighton.
