Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface scored twice and registered an assist, helping Bayer Leverkusen secure a crucial 4-1 away victory over Hoffenheim at the PreZero Arena on Saturday.
Xabi Alonso's side bounced back impressively following a 2-3 loss to RB Leipzig just before the international break which marked their first Bundesliga defeat since the final day of the 2022/23 season away at Bochum—a run of 35 games that ranks as the third-longest unbeaten streak in the league's history.
Boniface set up Martin Terrier for the opener in the 17th minute and added his own goal in the 30th minute, before Hoffenheim's Mergim Berisha pulled one back for the hosts before the interval.
Florian Wirtz then consolidated Leverkusen's lead with a third goal from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, before Boniface scored his second of the day and Leverkusen's fourth in the 75th minute after being set up by Jeremie Frimpong.
The Nigeria international's performance served as a reminder of his ability, and also silenced a segment of Super Eagles fans who had criticised him for his profligacy in front of goal during Nigeria's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.
Victor Boniface's performance in numbers
Before being substituted for Patrik Schick in the 86th minute, Victor Boniface made a significant impact with two goals and an assist.
His offensive efforts were evident as he registered four shots on target, with two finding the back of the net, alongside two shots off target and one shot blocked.
The 23-year-old also showcased his dribbling abilities, successfully completing three out of seven attempts, while recording 37 touches and delivering 11 accurate passes out of 13, reflecting an impressive 85% pass accuracy.
He excelled in aerial duels, winning both of his attempts, while securing three out of nine ground duels.
Boniface's two goals on Saturday marked his first and second of the new Bundesliga season, achieved across the opening three matches.
