Victor Osimhen transfer: 3 reasons Atletico Madrid lead Chelsea, PSG in race for Super Eagles star

Published on by

The future of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is once again dominating the summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

After another prolific season at Galatasaray, where he helped the Turkish giants win the Super Lig and reach the knockout stages of the Champions League, the Nigerian international is back as one of the hottest properties on the market.

Several elite clubs have been linked with the 27-year-old, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid. A return to Italy also appears unlikely despite interest from Serie A, with contractual complications and strong competition from abroad shaping the race for his signature.

Among the growing list of suitors, Atletico Madrid are increasingly being viewed as one of the clubs best positioned to complete a deal. From their transfer planning to their tactical setup and financial strategy, several factors could give Diego Simeone’s side a significant advantage.

Julián Álvarez’s future could open the door for Victor Osimhen

One of the biggest reasons Atletico Madrid are in a strong position is the uncertainty surrounding Argentine forward Julián Álvarez.

The former Manchester City striker has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs as well as PSG. Should Atletico receive a major offer for the World Cup winner, the club would instantly have both the financial resources and a vacant superstar role in attack.

Unlike some of their rivals, Atletico have a very clear plan. Barcelona are believed to regard Álvarez as their preferred attacking target but continue to face financial restrictions that could make a deal for Osimhen difficult. Arsenal and Manchester United remain interested in the Nigerian, but both clubs are exploring multiple striker options simultaneously.

The situation is different for Atlético. If Álvarez leaves the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Osimhen would reportedly become the club’s primary objective rather than a secondary option. That focus could prove decisive in a transfer battle where timing and commitment often make the difference.

Victor Osimhen is an ideal fit for Diego Simeone’s system

From a football perspective, few clubs appear better suited to Osimhen’s qualities than Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s teams are built around intensity, aggression, direct attacking play and relentless work without the ball. Those are all characteristics that have defined Osimhen throughout his career in France, Italy and Turkey.

The Nigerian combines explosive pace with physical strength, aerial dominance and an ability to press defenders relentlessly. Those attributes have traditionally been prized by Simeone, whose most successful strikers included Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao.

Osimhen would not be required to alter his game significantly to succeed in Madrid. Instead, he would enter a system designed to maximise his strengths.

There is also a strong personal connection between player and coach. Osimhen has previously spoken of his admiration for Simeone’s passionate and demanding style of football. The Atletico manager has likewise praised the Nigerian’s physical presence, movement and effectiveness in front of goal.

That mutual respect could become a major factor if transfer negotiations reach an advanced stage.

Atletico have shown they can finance a blockbuster move

Although Atletico Madrid do not usually spend as aggressively as some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, they have already demonstrated that they can complete huge transfers when the right opportunity emerges.

The club famously paid around €126 million to sign João Félix from Benfica, a deal that remains one of the biggest in Spanish football history.

A move for Osimhen would likely require a fee in the region of €100 million to €140 million. While that remains a substantial figure, it is not beyond Atletico’s reach if certain conditions are met.

The most important factor is the potential sale of Álvarez. A major transfer fee received for the Argentine would immediately provide funding for a move for Osimhen.

Atletico would also need to manage La Liga’s salary regulations carefully. Osimhen’s wages, image-rights agreements and commercial value make him one of the highest-profile forwards in Europe. Offloading some existing high earners could help create the necessary room within the club’s wage structure.

Another point working in Atletico’s favour is the player’s reported desire to experience Spanish football. Having already played successfully in Ligue 1, Serie A and the Turkish Super Lig, La Liga represents one of the few major challenges left for the Nigerian striker.

With Real Madrid already boasting a star-studded attacking unit and Barcelona facing financial limitations, Atletico offer the chance to become the undisputed focal point of a Champions League-calibre team. And that could be enough to convince Victor Osimhen to make that part of the Spanish capital is next home.

If the pieces fall into place this summer, Atletico Madrid could find themselves ahead of the queue for one of world football’s most coveted strikers.
