3 milestones Victor Osimhen helped Galatasaray reach in five-goal thriller at Basaksehir

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen opened the scoring for Galatasaray in their dramatic 3-2 victory over Istanbul Başakşehir in the Turkish Süper Lig, Afrik-Foot reports.

The striker found the net in the 16th minute to put his side ahead. However, he hobbled off 17 minutes later with what appeared to be a muscle injury.

After an eventful opening 45 minutes, the contest descended into thrilling chaos in the second half.

Following several squandered chances, Başakşehir leveled the score from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. Lucas Torreira restored Galatasaray’s advantage just five minutes later.

Başakşehir responded once more when Davinson Sánchez inadvertently headed into his own net while attempting a clearance.

Just three minutes later, Umut Bozok was sent off for a reckless challenge on Rafael Leão. Sánchez then thought he had redeemed himself with an 84th-minute winner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Gabriel Sara ultimately settled the contest on the stroke of 90 minutes, curling in a brilliant free-kick to seal a 3-2 victory for the reigning champions.

An Unusual Goal for Victor Osimhen

The strike was Osimhen’s sixth of the campaign. According to OptaCan, it marked only his second league goal from outside the penalty area across the last seven seasons.

Given that the Nigerian forward wreaks most of his havoc inside the 18-yard box, the long-range finish was a genuine rarity.

Two Istanbul Derby Records

The victory further cemented Galatasaray’s dominance across Istanbul. Opta notes that since Okan Buruk took charge in 2022, Galatasaray have recorded the most wins (39) and accumulated the most points (125) in Istanbul derbies.

The result also stretched the Cimbom’s winning streak against Başakşehir to nine matches — the longest winning run any side has recorded against Başakşehir in Süper Lig history.

Galatasaray now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they will host Sporting CP in their group opener, eager to begin their European campaign on a high.
