Victor Osimhen vs Stuttgart: 3 things Nigeria & Galatasaray fans need to know

Published on by

Victor Osimhen will be one of the stars to watch when Galatasaray host VfB Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, November 3.

Against the Germans at RAMS Park, the Super Eagles striker will aim to continue an excellent goalscoring form that has seen him register 21 goals and eight assists in his last 20 Super Lig games.

Osimhen scored in Galatasaray’s 4-0 win over Konyaspor on October 30, but his fitness is now a concern after he was substituted in the second half.

With Stuttgart next on the schedule, here are three things fans need to know about Osimhen ahead of the game.

Victor Osimhen will face Stuttgart for the first time

Victor Osimhen has never faced Stuttgart in a competitive senior match.

The Nigerian striker has played in Germany before, having joined VfL Wolfsburg in 2017. He made 16 appearances for the Bundesliga club but failed to score before leaving to continue his career elsewhere.

His first meeting with Stuttgart will offer him a chance to improve on that record against German opposition.

Osimhen has since developed into one of Europe’s most prolific strikers, and is already one of the most prolific goalscorers in Galatasaray’s history. Stuttgart will have to contend with those qualities if he is fit enough to play on Tuesday.

Osimhen has scored three Champions League goals against German opposition

Victor Osimhen has a strong record against the only German team he has faced in the Champions League, Eintracht Frankfurt. The Nigeria international fired home three goals in two meetings with Frankfurt during his time at Napoli.

He scored in Napoli’s 2-0 away win before netting twice in a 3-0 victory in Naples in the last 16.

Osimhen also holds the record as Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in Champions League history, with 17 goals and four assists in 29 appearances.

He has scored once in two Champions League matches this season, finding the net in Galatasaray’s 4-2 win over Lille but failing to score against Barcelona.

Osimhen is in fine form, but injury concerns cloud Stuttgart clash

Osimhen has scored 10 goals across all competitions this season and has continued to deliver in important matches for Galatasaray.

He scored twice in the 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe before finding the net with a header in the win over Lille in France.

The striker scored Galatasaray’s opening goal in their emphatic win over Konyaspor on October 30. He was substituted in the 61st minute after experiencing physical discomfort.

Concerns grew when he was seen limping while greeting supporters after the final whistle.

Galatasaray will need to assess his condition before deciding whether he can face Stuttgart. His absence would be a setback for the Turkish champions, given his recent form in the league and Europe.

Still, Osimhen is in celebration mode at the moment. Hours before the Konyaspor match, the 2023 Africa Footballer of the Year welcomed his second daughter in Istanbul. The Super Eagles striker dedicated his opening goal to his newborn.

If fit, Osimhen would be in high spirits against Stuttgart as Galatasaray target their second win in the Champions League this term.
