Victor Osimhen: What Super Eagles striker offers Juventus over Kolo Muani, Woltemade

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has emerged as a potential option for Juventus, who are struggling to score in Serie A this season.

Former Italy and AC Milan striker Marco Borriello backed the Galatasaray forward as the type of centre-forward the Italian giants need.

The 44-year-old made the case while discussing Juventus’ attacking options in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. He believes the club needs a proven, top-class goalscorer, with Osimhen among those who fit that profile.

The backing came after Osimhen scored twice in Galatasaray’s 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe in the Istanbul derby on 26 October. His performance also drew glowing praise from Turkish pundit Emre Bol, who believes the Nigerian is operating at a level above the Süper Lig.

Although there is no confirmation of a Juventus bid, two qualities help explain why Osimhen would be the best choice for the Old Ladies.

Juventus’ struggles in front of goal have strengthened the argument for signing a proven centre-forward. Randal Kolo Muani and Nick Woltemade have shown flashes of quality, particularly in Europe, but their Serie A output remains a concern.

The pair have managed just one goal and one assist combined across the first eight league games, all from Kolo Muani, while Woltemade has yet to score or register an assist in the competition.

Borriello believes the partnership lacks the penalty-box instincts the club needs.

“Not much, neither of them likes the penalty box,” the two-time UEFA Champions League winner said in quotes revealed by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Kolo isn’t scoring much, but he has quality and he’s unpredictable.”

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen fits the bill of what Borrellio is asking for, as he scored 65 goals and provided 16 assists in 108 Serie A games.

“Osimhen is strong, he knows Serie A and he knows Spalletti too. But beyond Osimhen, Juventus need a top goalscorer.”

Osimhen’s current form reinforces the argument. His two goals in Galatasaray’s 2-1 derby win over Fenerbahçe prompted Turkish pundit Emre Bol to admit that the Nigerian was way too good for the Super Lig.

“Osimhen is too much of a player for this league. He is one of those who ends the competition.”

“I cannot remember another player in years who, when he is on the pitch, has a 100 per cent impact on the match. He is a player who leaves his mark on the game.”

For Juventus, the distinction is not that Kolo Muani and Woltemade lack ability; it is that Osimhen has a proven record of scoring goals at the highest level, something the duo are still learning how to do.

His Serie A record and current scoring form make him an attractive answer to their need for a decisive number nine.

Whether or not Galatasaray will be willing to part ways with the former LOSC Lille striker is unknown at the moment.
