Former Liverpool player Don Hutchinson believes the club should focus on securing star forward Victor Osimhen, and has urged the club to reconsider their transfer priorities.
The Reds have yet to make significant moves in the transfer market but have been heavily linked with a £50 million deal for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old was crucial for the Magpies during the 2023/24 Premier League season, contributing directly to 21 goals in 35 appearances – scoring 11 and assisting 10 – to help Eddie Howe's side secure a seventh-place finish.
Despite these impressive stats, Hutchinson has contended that prioritising a consistent goalscorer like Osimhen is key to the Reds' pursuit of top honours.
Victor Osimhen the missing piece in Liverpool's title ambitions?
In a recent interview with ESPN, as relayed by TBR Football, Hutchinson shared his perspective on the club's transfer strategy.
He stated, “You would be better off putting £100 million towards Osimhen. £50 million for Gordon doesn’t really add up because of the players that Liverpool have got.
“They have got enough cover. They have a lot of players in wide areas, but what they lack, as we saw towards the end of the season, is that Darwin Nunez was inconsistent.
“If you are going to spend that little bit more and try and get the number one spot, push the boat out a little bit if you sell (defender Joe) Gomez for £30, £40 million, you can make the difference up.”
Victor Osimhen has a release clause set at €130 million, but Napoli are reportedly unwilling to accept anything less than €100 million for the striker.
The Italian side's asking price for the Nigeria international has proven a significant obstacle to a transfer this summer.
