MTN8 2025-26: Top 8 Players to watch

Published on by , updated on

The MTN8 is back to kickstart the 2025/26 season, and after a two-month hiatus, fans are buzzing with anticipation. The tournament, which features the top eight teams from the previous season, promises to be a thrilling curtain-raiser. Here are eight players to keep a close eye on as they look to make a big impact in this year's competition.

KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THESE EIGHT PLAYERS

1 – Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Mamelodi Sundowns)

The reigning PSL Footballer of the Season, Ribeiro returns to South Africa after an impressive FIFA Club World Cup performance that had many questioning his future with Sundowns.

He's back with the team and is expected to be available for their MTN8 quarterfinal against Richards Bay FC. Ribeiro's incredible form and goal-scoring ability will be the key to Sundowns' success in the tournament. His

presence alone on the field is a game-changer, and it will be fascinating to see if he can pick up right where he left off.

2 – Relebohile Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates):

A standout performer and the hero of the Pirates' MTN8 victory last season, Mofokeng carried the team on his shoulders with his electrifying play.

The question is whether he can deliver that same level of magic and guide the Buccaneers to another trophy. All eyes will be on the young star to see if he can rise to the occasion once again.

3 – Sipho Mbule (Orlando Pirates)

A new face at Pirates, Mbule joins from their rivals, Sundowns. He's expected to make a significant impact, and the MTN8 presents the perfect opportunity to show he can fit seamlessly into his new team.

It will be particularly interesting to see how he performs against his former club should they meet in the later stages of the competition.

4 – Oswin Appollis (Orlando Pirates)

Also new to the Pirates, Appollis is seen as a potential replacement for Mohau Nkota. After a disappointing season at Polokwane City, the MTN8 is his chance for a career revival.

This tournament is his first opportunity to introduce himself to the “Happy People” and prove his worth.

5 – Iqraam Rayners (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Finishing just behind Ribeiro in goals last season, Rayners is expected to lead the line for Sundowns. His consistent goal-scoring and experience will be vital in their pursuit of the MTN8 title.

6 – Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Fully recovered from injury, Zwane is back in domestic football. After featuring prominently in the FIFA Club World Cup, the veteran playmaker will be a crucial player to watch as he brings his invaluable experience and creativity back to the local stage.

7 – Yanela Mbuthuma (Orlando Pirates)

As a new arrival, Mbuthuma has a chance to secure a regular starting spot. He must seize any opportunity he gets in the MTN8 to show he has what it takes to be a key player for the Buccaneers.

8 – Fawaaz Basadien (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Sundowns' first signing of the transfer window, Basadien is expected to slot into the left-back position. The MTN8 will be his first chance to showcase his talents and demonstrate what he can bring to Masandawana.
