Benni McCarthy reveals why it is ‘almost impossible’ for him to coach in EPL

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy still has a burning desire to return to club management but he is not sure if he will ever get an opportunity to coach in the English Premier League.

McCarthy is currently the head coach of the Kenya national team, where he has a contract until 2027, and he has spoken of his ambition to get back to coaching a club as soon as his stint in East Africa is over.

However, the former Cape Town City and AmaZulu tactician does not think he stands a chance of managing in what is considered the best league in the world due to a number of factors.

“That will always be a dream [to coach in the Premier League],” McCarthy told Best Betting Sites.

Why does Benni feel he won’t coach in EPL?

“But really, I think it’s almost impossible. There is a very slim chance. But you have got to keep dreaming and hoping, working extremely hard towards that because when you see people looking like me, there’s not a lot of us in management,” added McCarthy, explaining how difficult it is for black managers to get opportunities in the Premier League.

“Nuno [Espirito Santo] is probably the only manager that’s fortunate enough to be in such an honourable space,” he said of the West Ham coach, who has previously handled Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur and most-recently, Nottingham Forest.

“But for the rest of us, we’ll continue to work hard and hopefully that opportunity one day comes. But if it doesn’t, we will fight so that the next generation gets better opportunities off the back of the sacrifices we’ve made.”

However, South Africa’s all-time top scorer still feels he could make a great coach if such an opportunity came his way or even in the English second tier Championship.

“It will always be a dream to manage in the Premier League or Championship. It’s the best league in the world,” he added.

“It’s the most exciting league. It’s tough. It’s got everything. So as players now turned over to become managers, you would also want to experience managing against the best teams, managing against the best managers in the world.

“To test yourself, to really put yourself out of your comfort zone. So that’s what we all strive to achieve. I will continue to fight for that and hopefully one day somebody gives me the opportunity and I get to fulfill that dream,” the former Manchester United attacking coach further said.
