Chiefs-linked Tau & Zungu, next Wydad AC signings? Mokwena updates

The Red Castle are restructuring ahead of the new season hoping to challenge for the Botola Pro League.

Bongani Zungu and Percy Tau have been linked with a move to North Africa to join Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Athletic Club.

Zungu is currently a free agent after his exit from the Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. The 31-year-old had also been rumoured to be on his way to Kaizer Chiefs but the deal did not materialize.

In his previous interviews, Mokwena had expressed his desire to reunite with the midfielder in Morocco.

Will Mokwena sign Zungu?

Last season, Zungu played 30 games for Masandawana across all competitions, with a return of three goals.

“I can speak about Bongani Zungu because he’s not attached at the moment, there is a huge possibility. I am a big Bongani Zungu fan, I think everybody knows,” the 37-year-old Mokwena told SAFJA.

“I love Bongani Zungu as a person because this is what makes him a top football player. He’s an incredible human being. We just have to see because it’s a bit more complicated than what people think but it is a big possibility. It is something that I can say we are considering.”

Is Tau on his way to the Red Castle?

South Africa international Percy Tau hinted he is ready to leave Egyptian giants Al Ahly after winning 10 major trophies since the 2021/22 season.

In the past, Mokwena has stated he would be happy to work with the versatile attacker. However, he refused to comment on the matter since Tau, who has been severally linked to Amakhosi, is still contracted.

“Will we see South African players? I don’t know,” Mokwena concluded when asked whether he would be signing players from Mzansi.
