Legendary ex-Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe has shared his positive impressions of Mamelodi Sundowns' FIFA Club World Cup campaign, particularly commending their strong opening performance.
Currently third in Group F with three points, Masandawana secured a vital 1-0 win against Ulsan HD, demonstrating their competitive spirit.
While they suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling encounter, Radebe maintains that the Brazilians have shown they belong on this global stage.
The former Leeds United defender firmly believes Sundowns are “not out of their depth” and retain a strong possibility of advancing to the knockout stage, contingent on securing a victory in their crucial final group fixture against Fluminense.
‘SUNDOWNS SHOULD BE PROUD OF THEMSELVES’
“I think it started well. I think that’s the most important thing you need, a good start,” Radebe told iDiski Times.

“But it gets tougher as it goes on because I mean it’s a Club World Cup, there are big teams there and there’s a lot of quality. But I think a club like Sundowns should be proud to be representing South Africa and realise how far they got to this stage.
“I mean the quality of the football that they play I think it matches where they are today.”
Radebe this tournament serves as undeniable proof that African football is swiftly narrowing the gap with the rest of the world. He highlights the impressive performances and competitive nature of the teams, indicating a significant leap in quality and strategic development across the continent.
“I think we [Africans] have always played second fiddle,” added Radebe.
“And I think now we are showcasing that we are at the stage where we can compete with the world, which I think is great.
“I mean it shows the quality of the players, the individuals I mean you can see that football in Africa is on the up.”
