Rele Mofokeng on the verge of PSL history

Published on by

Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng is just two goal contributions away from joining an elite list of PSL players.

Mofokeng has continued to impress this season, having netted 10 goals and added seven assists in the PSL for Pirates, to take his goal contributions to 17, already the same as what Tshegofatso Mabasa managed for the Buccaneers in 2023-24.

However, with two more goal contributions, he will join an exclusive club of players with 19 goal contributions in the PSL that includes Pirates teammate Deon Hotto, who hit that tally in 2018-19, Sekhukhune United’s veteran forward Bradley Grobbler (2019-20) an ex-colleague Monnapule Saleng (2022-23).

Mofokeng could even aim higher as only three other players have managed 20 or more goal contributions in the PSL in the last 10 years.

Mofokeng closer to PSL history makers

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile holds the record of 28 goal contributions achieved in 2021-22, when he scored 23 goals and added five assists, that coming after 21 goal contributions a year earlier, having managed 15 goals and six assists.

Most PSL goal contributions

Former Sundowns forward Percy Tau hit 26 goal contributions in 2017-18, having scored 11 times and added 15 assists, while Lucas Ribeiro, who ditched the Brazilians in controversial fashion last year, departed just after being crowned PSL Player of the Year, having managed 25 goal contributions that included 16 goals and nine assists in 2024-25.

With five games to go and on current form, Rele could not only break into the elite club but also edge closer to the record if he sustains his momentum until the final match of the season.

That would only increase the calls for him to be crowned Player of the Season as the debate has already started with some tipping him to be crowned while others are looking at his Pirates teammate Oswin Appollis.
