Riveiro explains weakness in Al Ahly’s draw with Porto in an eight-goal thriller

Published on by

Al Ahly threw a lead four times to draw 4-4 with Porto in Group D's Fifa Club World Cup game that was played on Tuesday morning.

Jose Riveiro's team scored through Wessam Abou Ali, who grabbed a hat-trick, and Ali Ben Romdhane while the Portuguese outfit responded courtesy of Rodrigo Mora, William Gomes, Samuel Aghehowa, and Pepe.

Inter Miami advanced as Group A winners with Palmeiras coming in second as the two sides played to a 2-2 draw. Porto finished third as the Egyptian champions ended their campaign at the bottom of the pool.

Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was happy with what he saw, but rued the missed chances by his players. The Spaniard has further appreciated the fans for cheering and supporting the team throughout.

‘It is not the result that we wanted'

“I think we played a good game. It is a pity that we did not capitalise on the number of chances we created. There were a lot of opportunities to score a lot of goals,” Riveiro told DAZN.

“Obviously, not the results that we were looking for because we wanted to go through, but there was improvement. In the second half, both teams were very tired; the weather conditions were tough for the boys to play football consistently.

“It seems that we were playing in Cairo. It is something that is unbelievable. I am not yet used to the Al Ahly fans. This is my third game with the team, my second week with the team, so everything is happening so fast,” Riveiro said.

“I am feeling the love of the people. We need them, and today they played a big role in the second half to keep us in the game. So, yeah, it was a nice experience.”
