Mamelodi Sundowns’ promising young defender, Thato Sibiya, is nearing a move to French Ligue 1 side Lille OSC, with a deal reportedly in its final stages.
According to FARPost, Lille is pursuing a loan agreement for the 20-year-old with an option to make the transfer permanent. Sundowns are said to be open to the proposal, viewing it as a positive step for the player’s development.
While the transfer has not been officially completed, with some formalities still pending, negotiations between the two clubs have advanced significantly.

Lille has been tracking Sibiya’s progress for some time and has now intensified its efforts to sign him. The loan would offer the young defender a chance to gain valuable experience in European football, while Lille can assess his performance before committing to a permanent deal.
Sibiya’s recent career highlights
This potential move follows a season where Sibiya found it difficult to secure consistent playing time at Sundowns, despite breaking into the first team during the 2025/26 campaign.
Sibiya was a key member of the South Africa U-20 squad at last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. His strong performances earned him a promotion to the Sundowns senior team, where coach Miguel Cardoso gave him an early introduction to top-flight football.

Cardoso demonstrated his confidence in the youngster by starting him in both legs of the CAF Champions League tie against Al Hilal of Sudan. Sibiya played in the 2-2 draw in Pretoria and the subsequent 2-1 loss in Rwanda. He also made appearances in domestic competitions, including the league opener against Orbit College and a Nedbank Cup match against TS Galaxy.
Limited opportunities at Sundowns
However, breaking into a star-studded Sundowns lineup has proven to be a significant hurdle. The left-back position is highly competitive, with established international Aubrey Modiba being the first choice.
The recent introduction of Divine Lunga against Kaizer Chiefs, along with the presence of Fawaaz Basadien and Asekho Tiwani, further highlights the depth in that position.

With first-team opportunities limited at his current club, a move to Europe could provide Sibiya with the exposure and consistent game time needed to advance his career. Lille is known for its strong record of nurturing young talent, making it an attractive destination.
The French club also has a notable South African connection through striker Lebo Mothiba, who developed in Lille’s academy as a teenager. Mothiba rose through the ranks to make his senior debut for the club before moving on to play for Valenciennes and Strasbourg, showcasing a clear pathway for young players at the club.
