Veteran PSL coach gives Kaizer Chiefs transfer advise on Khanyisa Mayo

Veteran coach Dan Malesela has offered his perspective on Khanyisa Mayo‘s challenging season at Kaizer Chiefs, suggesting the club should retain the striker despite his inconsistent form.

Mayo found the net in Chiefs’ recent 4-1 victory over Magesi FC, a result that solidified their third-place position in the league. The goal was only his second of the campaign and his first since recovering from an injury.

Currently on a season-long loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad, Mayo’s deal reportedly includes either an option to buy or a mandatory purchase clause for the Soweto giants.

Although his parent club contract runs until June, his time at Naturena has been hampered by injuries and limited starts.

Malesela, the former Baroka FC coach, believes Chiefs should look past the striker’s current struggles.

“It depends on what Chiefs see and what they want from him,” Malesela told KickOff. “What is not nice is that sometimes he doesn’t play, or he comes from the bench. When you have a player who comes with a reputation, you expect him to play all the time.”

Despite the uncertainty, Malesela urged the club to consider the scarcity of quality forwards in the modern game.

“I’m not sure whether Chiefs would want to keep him or not, but with the way strikers of Mayo’s quality are so scarce, I would keep him at the club,” he continued. “Where are you going to find another striker? As a team and a coach, I would rather keep him and use him the way I would want to use him next season.”

Some observers have suggested that Mayo’s difficulties stem from his deployment as an out-and-out striker, arguing that he is more effective in a free role behind the main forward where he can drift into wide areas or operate centrally.
