Wydad Athletic Club president Hicham Ait Menna has refuted claims that the club is looking to sign Percy Tau and his Al Ahly team-mate Reda Selim.
Tau’s future has been the subject of speculation after Al Ahly tried several times to get him out of the club without success in the off-season transfer window.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward is in the final months of his deal with the Egyptian giants but both parties are yet to agree on the best way to part ways after the club’s offer to pay him half of his wages and terminate his contract was rejected by the player, who has demanded the full amount.
Wydad boss terms winger’s links ‘baseless’
With the January transfer window approaching, a number of clubs have been linked with the player, among them Kaizer Chiefs, Wydad and an unnamed side from Qatar, but the Moroccan giants have now distanced themselves from any interest in the Bafana Bafana winger.
“We will not enter into negotiations with Al Ahly duo Reda Selim and Percy Tau, and there has been no communication with the duo to contract them in the upcoming transfer window,” Ait Menna told Radio Mars as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“What was recently suggested about the approaching signing of the Al Ahly duo of Reda Selim and Percy Tau is baseless and we did not enter into negotiations with any of them.”
What does the future hold for Tau?
Tau’s contract runs out in June 2025 but Al Ahly appear determined to offload him in January to create room for some reinforcements with an eye on the revamped FIFA Club World Cup which will take place between June and July next year.
It could, however, come down to which club offers Al Ahly the better deal or which contract offer appeals to the player as he is on $1.2 million per year in Cairo and would be looking for something close to that to leave now, otherwise he might opt to stay on until the end of the season.
Tau has made 12 appearances across all competitions for Al Ahly this season, scoring three goals while providing an assist.
